Kyle is on cloud nine

Kyle Critchell is on “cloud nine” after earning a call-up
to the Wales semi-professional squad.
The Dorchester Town defender will line up for this afternoon’s
home match with Woking (3pm) before dashing off to link up with
his Welsh team-mates.
Critchell will then fly to Portugal tomorrow ahead of Wednesday’s
International Challenge Trophy clash at the Municipal Stadium in
Fatima.
The 23-year-old is disappointed to be missing Tuesday’s
Blue Square South trip to St Albans City but could not hide his
excitement at being selected to represent the Dragons.
He said: “A lot of people want you to put club before country
but Ashley Vickers and the club have been fully behind me – even
though I will miss Tuesday’s game – and wished me all
the best.
“I’m on cloud nine right now. I had to pull out of
the last squad through injury so I just want to get back in the
fold as I’m proud to play for Wales.
“I’m enjoying my football again and that’s what
I wanted to achieve.”
Wales lie in Group C alongside Portugal, Poland and Northern Ireland,
with whom they shared a 2-2 draw in the opening fixture of the
competition.
Prior to Wednesday’s date with Portugal, Critchell’s
main focus is helping the Magpies to three points this afternoon.
And he believes the visit of the Cards will provide the acid test
of how much the county town side has improved in recent weeks.
He added: “I’ve played against the majority of teams
in this league and there’s only one that stands out – Newport
County – and they’re running away with the title.
“The rest are all beatable, especially at home. I don’t
think we go into any game with fear and that’s credit to
Ash.
“Chelmsford struggled to beat us at their place and with
the frame of mind we’re in right now we are looking to beat
Woking this afternoon.
“I’m sure it will be a good test to see how far we
have come.”
Critchell joined the Magpies from arch-rivals Weymouth in November
and has already been offered a new deal for next season but, like
striker Ryan Moss, the versatile full-back wants to see if current
boss Ashley Vickers will be handed the role on a permanent basis
before putting pen to paper.
He said: “It’s nothing against the club or the fans,
who have been brilliant since I came here, but I have got deep
respect for Ash.
“He’s got a lot of things to learn in management but
he’s been phenomenal in the short of space of time he’s
been in charge.
“I’m happy to sign a new contract but once Ash’s
future is clear then I’m sure everybody else’s will
be too.
“He’s not been involved in management before so what
he has achieved so far is a minor miracle.
“Having said that the likes of Phil Simkin, the rest of
the backroom staff and chairman Shaun Hearn have all played their
part."
