Vickers: The best yet
by

Manager Ashley Vickers believes the Magpies can take more positives
from last night’s 2-1 victory at Hampton & Richmond “than
any other win we have had this season”.
Debutant striker Josh Llewellyn marked his first appearance for
the county town club with the opening goal but then saw his evening
cut short by a hamstring injury.
Ryan Moss extended Dorchester’s lead on the half-hour mark
before two second-half bombshells – in the form of Matt Groves’ red
card and Ian Hodges’ 59th-minute header – threatened
to spoil the party.
Fortunately, the visitors held on to bag their 10th win of the
Blue Square South campaign and move up to 15th in the standings,
14 points clear of danger.
An ecstatic Vickers said: “I’m ever so proud of the
lads – they really applied themselves. We didn’t start
the best but we knuckled down and got to grips with their formation
and then got two good goals.
“We then had the unfortunate sending off, after which they
went and scored, but the boys got the bit between their teeth and
defended like Trojans – putting their bodies on the line
at every opportunity.
“It was a good all-round team performance and we’ll
take more from this game than any other win we have had this season.
“Character is one of the key words and the character of
the lads was immense. When we conceded the goal in the second half
the lads could have melted but they stood tall and can take great
pleasure from that.
“Hampton are fighting for their lives so to win the way
we did is a huge step forward and fills everyone with confidence.”
Asked for his opinion on Groves’ dismissal, the Magpies’ boss
added: “I didn’t see the incident but when the whistle
went I thought it was Groover who had been fouled so when the red
card came out it was crazy.
“Referee’s make decisions though, and I can’t
do much about it.”
Reflecting on the contributions of Llewellyn and fellow ex-Terra
Scott Brice, who made his debut as a second-half substitute, Vickers
said: “I was delighted for Josh when he got his goal as he’s
a lovely lad, just like Scott is. Scott then came on and he too
put his body on the line.
“They’re both good characters and they will fit in
well.”
However, the Magpies could now be without Llewellyn for Saturday’s
trip to Braintree Town.
Of the forward’s injury, Vickers added: “We’re
not sure how bad it is yet but it is shame. I’m glad he came
off as soon as he felt it.”
