Royals shot down in Senior cruise

Dorchester eased into the quarter-finals of the Dorset Senior Cup with a straight forward victory over Blandford United at the Jewson Stadium last night.
The two sides, five tiers apart in the non-League pyramid, were separated by first-half strikes from Jamie Mudge, Alex Browne, Gary Bowles and a Justin Hall own goal.
Manager Shaun Brooks praised the attitude of his players.
He said: "It was a good workout and I thought the approach
in attitude was spot on.
"It gave us the opportunity to get some game time into some
of the players and take a look at a few of the Under-18s.
"The Under-18s stepped in and they did okay, we just need
to involve them in the first team when we can, which is the idea
behind entering this competition."
Seven changes were made from Saturday's FA Cup win with Mudge,
Bowles, Ronayne Marsh-Brown and Jamie Gleeson the only surviving
members of Saturday's starting line-up.
Dorchester Under-18s' Adam Taylor made his first appearance for
the first team, occupying the right of midfield, while fellow Under-18s
Matt Johnson, Danny Critchel, Neil Kellaway and Sam Filkins all
made the bench.
It was the Royals of the Dorset Premier League though who had
the first opportunity but after Joe Wells' through ball in the second
minute, Jamie Haylock took an age and Nathan Peprah-Annan got back
to snuff out the danger.
Three minutes later and the Magpies went close on two occasions.
First, Gleeson's close-range drive was blocked by United keeper
Lee Pitman, and then from the resulting Gleeson corner, Bowles'
header was blocked on the line.
A mistake from right-back Ryan Elliott presented makeshift striker Browne with a sight of goal but his driven effort went narrowly wide of the far post.
Bowles failed to find the target with a 20-yarder before a Gleeson corner in the 18th minute was brought down on the chest by Browne and then fired over.
Dorchester only had to wait a further two minutes to open the scoring. A well-worked free-kick routine was finished off by Mudge, who took a touch and unleashed a powerful strike into the bottom corner.
Mitchell Nicholson forced a good save from Pitman before Bowles
headed over from Gleeson's corner.
Nicholson was denied a second time by the visiting keeper in the
27th minute but Browne was on hand to smash the rebound home and
double the Magpies' advantage.
Just 60 seconds after the restart Mudge wasted a golden opportunity with only Pitman to beat.
However, the inevitable third goal arrived just past the half hour. Darren Watts stood over a 20-yard free-kick and instead of shooting played a quick pass to Nicholson on the 18-yard line who then found Bowles with just Pitman in his way and the defender made no mistake.
And it was 4-0 soon after courtesy of an own goal. Wells headed
Patrece Liburd's initial effort off the line but the ball was played
out to Browne on the right side and his delivery was inadvertently
headed in by Blandford's Hall.
Moments before the interval Browne headed agonisingly over from
Gleeson's corner and Nicholson had an effort ruled out for a foul
on the keeper.
Minutes into the second period Taylor was forced to clear from underneath his own crossbar. The Dorchester dominance resumed soon after but Mudge cleared the bar after being put clean through by Peprah-Annan.
Chances became less frequent in the second half until, with 20 minutes to go, substitute Kellaway flashed an effort wide of the left post.
Blanford tightened up in defence while Dorchester lost their attacking edge. But there was still time for Hall to almost put through his own net for a second time before the final whistle blew. |
