Ryan’s Senior service ends Bees challenge

Dorset Echoby Ky Capel

A Ryan Moss double saw Dorchester Town through to the semi-finals of the Dorset Senior Cup last night at the expense of Bridport.

A goal in each half was enough for the Blue Square South Magpies against their Toolstation Western League Division One visitors and county town boss Shaun Brooks was happy with what he saw.

He said: “It was just about comfortable. We could have gone behind in the first minute so we’ve got to make sure we switch on quicker.

“I thought their keeper was excellent but we tried to play the right way, the way we want to play at this club, and it’s about getting the younger ones into that mode of playing.

“Danny Critchel was excellent at left-back but then all the Under-18s did well, which was pleasing.

“It was also good to see Ryan get a couple of goals so it was a pleasing night’s work.”

Defeated manager Ian Hutchinson was also pleased with his own side.

He said: “We gave a good account of ourselves. We were a bit nervy in the first 10 minutes but we knocked it about quite well and with a bit of luck we could have scored early on but it hit the post and at the moment things aren’t going for us.

“With Dorchester’s first goal maybe nine times out of 10 the ref would have given a foul on our keeper while the second one was just a bit of inexperience from Chris Herbst. Dorchester though were worthy winners.”

Brooks made seven changes from the 1-1 draw with Welling. Gary Bowles returned from illness, Under-18 duo Danny Critchel and Adam Taylor both started while Regan Coward, Nathan Peprah-Annan, Tom Mitchell and Darren Watts also made the starting XI.

Under-18s Matt Johnson and Ryan Chance made up the home bench.

The Bees meanwhile, welcomed back skipper Darren Lock and fellow midfielder Russell Legg to the fray.

It was the Magpies though who were forced to withstand an almighty scare early on as with just 45 seconds on the clock Gary Bulman headed Dan Wise’s free-kick on to a post with home keeper Coward stranded.

But once they got a foothold in the game, Dorchester soon took the lead through Moss. A Ronayne Marsh-Brown delivery was headed against the woodwork by Moss but the home striker reacted quickest and stooped low to nod in the rebound.

The Magpies pressed for a second and twice keeper Lee Cleal was called into action, first getting down to block Taylor’s effort before pushing aside a drive from Watts.

Legg volleyed narrowly over on 20 minutes as Bridport continued to worry their higher league opponents.

And Peprah-Annan had to be alert to block from the same man just past the half-hour.

At the other end an excellent centre from Critchel found Moss six yards out but the former Bashley man failed to beat Cleal.

The Bridport stopper was again at his best three minutes before the interval, producing a double save to deny Moss and then Mitchell Nicholson.

Moss had a header saved six minutes into the restart before seeing an effort ruled out for an alleged foul on Cleal.

But Moss soon got his second of the game, and eighth of the season, after being brought down by Chris Herbst in the penalty box and then converting the spot-kick himself.

Nicholson almost made it three a minute later only to see his fierce drive flash wide.

Goalmouth action was rare as the match drew on with the exception of a Mitchell chip that almost dropped under Cleal’s crossbar and a Nichol-son volley that narrowly missed the target.
