Ryan earns cup delight

Dorset Echoby Ky Capel

A dominant second-half display earned Dorchester their first home win of the season and a place in the fourth qualifying round of the FA Cup.

Ryan Moss got the only goal of the game just before the hour but it could and should have been more for the Magpies who had 18 attempts at Gosport's goal.

Magpies' boss Shaun Brooks made three changes from the 2-1 defeat at Maidenhead United. Gary Bowles came in for Patrece Liburd, Jamie Mudge replaced Mitchell Nicholson, who had been struggling with an ankle injury, while Jamie Gleeson earned a recall to the starting XI.

After playing both Tom Mitchell and Danny Clay in midfield holding roles the previous weekend, Brooks opted for just one and it was the latter who dropped to the bench.

Leon Osei was absent from Saturday's list as he left the club by mutual consent. Dorchester Under-18s' Danny Critchel was promoted to the first team and among the substitutes while flu kept both Nathan Peprah-Annan and Ronayne Marsh-Brown on the sidelines.

The first opportunity fell to the higher league outfit. A clearance from Mark Jermyn turned into the perfect through pass for Moss, but the striker lost his footing at the crucial moment under pressure from Andy Puckett.

Moments later, Wes Fogden, after flicking the ball over a defender, was thwarted by the onrushing Boro keeper, and ex-Magpie trialist, Nick Hutchings.

Dave Birmingham had Gosport's first shot at goal, but pulled his effort wide of the left-hand post.

The early play was scrappy and Dorchester were finding life difficult against their BGB Southern League Division One South & West visitors.

Visiting forward Justin Bennett wasted a good opening as he was left one on one with Dorchester's Kevin Hill, scooping his shot high from just inside the box.

Bowles was harshly penalised for a foul 20 yards out but Gareth Stewart raced across his goal to keep Lee Chudy's goal-bound effort out of harm's way.

Mudge drove narrowly wide after picking up the pieces on the edge of the Gosport penalty area and then curled off target a minute later from a similar distance.

Mitchell had to be replaced nine minutes before the break after failing to recover from an ankle knock he sustained following a foul by Michael Birmingham.

And it remained goal-less as the half-time whistle blew.

The Magpies started brightly in the opening few minutes of the restart.

A dangerous cross from Mudge forced Hutchings into action but the same Dorchester man could only shoot wide of the far post with just Hutchings to beat.

The Magpies' joint top scorer put a third opportunity wide before strike partner Moss gave the hosts a one-goal advantage.

A searching pass from Jake Smeeton bounced up perfectly for Moss who, some 16 yards out and at and angle, expertly lifted the ball over Hutchings and into the net.

Dorchester were in the ascendancy and a Nick Crittenden chest down set up Mudge whose volleyed effort was always going wide of the left-hand post.

Midway through the half, Hutchings did well to keep out Hill's downward header from a Jamie Gleeson corner.

And Hutchings was called into action again soon after to keep out Mudge's low drive from 20 yards.

Gosport were becoming increasingly frustrated and the Birming-ham brothers, Dave and Michael, were fortunate to escape unpunished on more than one occasion.

With 15 minutes to go, Hill rose highest from Gleeson's corner but Hutchings held onto the home skipper's effort.

Hill nodded down for defensive sidekick Bowles who controlled well with his chest but could only direct his acrobatic strike over the top and out of the ground.

Mudge was determined to get on the scoresheet. However, he again fired wide of goal with eight minutes left.

Further efforts from the home side saw Crittenden pull wide and Moss twice denied by Hutchings while at the other end a vital touch from Jermyn prevented Vince Rusher from having a clear sight at Stewart's goal.

Then, in the 89th minute, last ditch blocks from the visiting defence stopped both Fogden and Crittenden from surely putting the game beyond doubt.

In stoppage time, a Crittenden shot, which took a deflection off away skipper Josh Thomas, found the hands of Hutchings.

But the Magpies got the victory they deserved and secured their place in the hat for the next round.

Prior to the game Wes Fogden scooped the Magpies' September Player of Month award.
