Magpies silence Hammers

Dorset Echoby Terry Spracklen

Dorchester produced an impressive performance at the County Ground last night to chalk up their third pre-season victory against Wessex League opponents.

Ivan Forbes netted for the third consecutive game while the other goals were scored by four newcomers to this season's squad.

Manager Shaun Brooks is happy with the progress made so far.

He said: "It was another good workout. I thought the attitude to the game was great. They've had to match Hamworthy physically in the first half but I thought, other than a five or ten-minute spell when Kevin Hill went off with sore ribs, we pretty much controlled the game."

Hill was injured by a high challenge from Joe Byrne, who was cautioned by Poole referee Ben Cobb, but returned to the field of play ten minutes later and went on to open the scoring in the 29th minute when Nick Crittenden's superb crossfield pass was laid off by Jamie Mudge for Hill to rifle into the far corner from 25 yards.

Brooks added: "Kev took a kick to the ribs. He's a bit sore but he wanted to carry on and we got 63 minutes out of him which I think was enough."

In a spirited start, Hamworthy went close after 15 minutes when ex-Terra Michael Dean rattled the Dorchester crossbar but once Hill had broken the deadlock there was no looking back for the dominant visitors.

Two minutes after Hill's strike, Forbes picked up Patrece Liburd's clearance and scored with a low drive in off the far post.

In the second period, Hamworthy failed to cut out a long ball and Mudge rounded keeper Martin Peters to slot home the third.

The fourth goal arrived in the 70th minute when, from substitute Leon Osei's pinpoint delivery, Moss fired in from close range.

The Hammers were reduced to ten men 17 minutes from time when Mark Dancer was dismissed for foul and abusive language, and five minutes later substitute Bill Puckett completed the Magpies' goal feast by rounding Peters to fire home.

But Dorchester were unable to keep a clean sheet as Nathan Walker squeezed home a late consolation through a crowded six-yard box.

Brooks is still undecided about which trialists will be offered contracts.

He said: "Leon came on and did well. Bill Puckett, who I've worked with before, has shown what a good finisher he is but we can't take them all on board as we haven't got the budget.

"But it would be nice to keep them around and take a look at them. Chairman Eddie Mitchell is in Dubai at the moment so we will be speaking to him when he comes back."

One position not yet resolved is that of goalkeeper. Brooks added: "We're endeavouring to get a new face for Saturday. I think Nick Hutchings did okay but we are looking for a number one keeper - somebody with a little bit more experience."

The Magpies travel to play another Wessex League side, Shaftesbury, tonight (7.45pm).

One name definitely on the team sheet after being left out of last night's line-up is Michael Walker.

Brooks said: "Michael Walker will be playing tonight. He's got a size and presence about him so it will be interesting to have a look at him."
