Setanta Sorrow

Dorset Echoby Ky Capel

Dorchester Town crashed out of the Setanta Shield last night in a nine-goal, topsy-turvy first round clash with Newport County.

The Magpies went ahead at the Jewson Stadium through Mitchell Nicholson's first goal for the club but County went 2-1 up before the hosts wrestled the lead back once more courtesy of strikes from Leon Osei and Wes Fogden.

And just when the Magpies thought they had won it in normal time, Phil Walsh pounced to force extra-time.

Newport's Danny Rose then made it 4-3 only to see Gary Bowles head in another equaliser.

The winning goal - and the 17th between the two sides this season already - was claimed by Exiles' Paul Hall with seven minutes left on the clock.

Magpies' boss Shaun Brooks made six changes from Saturday's 0-0 draw with Welling United. Osei came in for the injured Kevin Hill, Nicholson took the place of the unavailable Ryan Moss while Darren Watts, Nathan Peprah-Annan, Michael Walker and Jake Smeeton were all called into the side.

And it was Dorchester who started the brighter. A long searching pass from Fogden found Jamie Mudge in space in the fourth minute and he released Nicholson who timed his run perfectly and was in on goal.

But a heavy touch allowed County keeper Nicky Church the chance to foil the Magpies' forward before the ball was eventually cleared by former Terra Ashley Vickers.

Nicholson was in the thick of the action once more as he found himself onside and with a clear sight of goal - courtesy of Peprah-Annan's long clearing header.

The Aussie tried his luck first time but saw his effort drop agonisingly over the top.

The 18-year-old though finally got his just rewards three minutes later. Gareth Stewart's kick was headed on by Tom Mitchell to Osei who spread the play right for Watts.

The midfielder then played a first-time pass into the path of Nicholson who took a touch before sliding the ball under the body of Church for 1-0.

Dorchester were worthy of their lead and moments later Osei flashed a low drive wide from just outside the penalty area.

The hosts survived a scare on 24 minutes when former Portsmouth man and ex-Jamaican international Hall showed his class by dropping a shoulder before curling a left-footed effort against a post.

Rob Duffy then saw a header, from Collins' cross, sail over the top of Stewart's crossbar just minutes later.

The warning signs were not heeded and Cooper drew Newport level in emphatic fashion. The wide man received possession some 25 yards out and had time to line up his shot which flew past the outstretched palm of Stewart.

Mudge tried to restore the Magpies' advantage but fired wide from 18 yards after a positive run.

Dorchester could have found themselves behind shortly after had Hall not miscued in the box.

Nicholson's night came to a sudden end just before the interval as an aerial challenge left him in a heap on the halfway line. After three minutes of treatment the Aussie was carried off and replaced by Nick Crittenden.

The second period started at a slower pace but, ten minutes in, Vickers made a decisive interception to prevent Walker from surely heading in, while from the resulting corner Watts shot wide from distance following Vickers' clearance.

The game swung Newport's way on the hour as Duffy put them ahead. The latter of two successive corners was taken by Adie Harris and directed on to the head of Duffy who stooped low to head home between a number of defending bodies.

Four minutes later and Dorchester were almost back on level times. Jamie Gleeson, 20 yards from goal, played an expert pass through to Fogden but his left-foot strike came back off the right-hand post.

The home side did manage an equaliser in the 69th minute when Osei latched on to Gleeson's through ball and kept his cool to beat Church in the Exiles' goal.

And the Magpies soon found themselves ahead for the second time in the game courtesy of Fogden.

Osei's ball into the box fell to Fogden 18 yards out and he adjusted well to get a strike in on goal which beat Church.

The visiting gloveman felt his view had been impeded by Peprah-Annan but the home defender was played onside by a covering opponent.

A wake up call in the 84th minute saw substitute Kris Leek beat Smeeton and fire a cross-cum-shot against the crossbar.

Mitchell then went close to scoring his first Dorchester goal but his effort, from Crittenden's corner, was instinctively palmed away from danger by Church.

In the final minute of the 90, Newport substitute Walsh beat Stewart to Jenkins' right-sided cross and saw his header clip the inside of a post before finding the net to take the game into a further 30 minutes.

Both sides had penalty shouts turned down by the referee early in extra-time before a Crittenden set piece flashed past Church's left-hand post.

Fogden collected a through pass from Bowles and did well to force a save from Church at a tight angle.

Newport though, went straight up the other end and succeeded where Dorchester failed as the Welsh outfit carved open the home defence and Rose was left with the simplest of finishes from 10 yards.

The match took yet another twist as Bowles made it 4-4. The defender met Crittenden's free-kick, beating Church in the process, to guide the ball into an unguarded net.

But back came the Exiles, and Hall in particular. The 36-year-old charged forward at pace before smashing a low shot beyond the dive of Stewart.
