Extra-time cup agony

Dorset Echoby Ky Capel

Dorchester's FA Cup dreams ended in heartache last night as they were beaten by Oxford United’s late show at the Jewson Stadium.

The Magpies thought they had done enough to win the original meeting 11 days ago in this first round tie but saw a last-gasp Ryan Moss effort disallowed.

And they could have been forgiven for thinking the same in last night’s replay when Jamie Mudge gave them the lead, which they held until the 77th minute when James Constable pounced.

Extra-time arrived and after Jamie Gleeson was sent off for a second bookable offence in the first period, Blue Square Premier Oxford put the match to bed with goals from substitutes Phil Trainer and Yemi Odubade in the second half.

The county town cause was not helped prior to kick-off. Wes Fogden was absent from the line-up after he was taken to hospital with a punctured lung following an injury he sustained at Hampton & Richmond on Saturday – his place being taken by the returning Nick Crittenden.

Flu kept Gary Bowles out of the squad so Patrece Liburd partnered Kevin Hill at the back while Under-18s duo Adam Taylor and Danny Critchel were promoted to the bench.

Despite winning a first minute corner, Dorchester soon found themselves on the back foot. Constable escaped the attentions of Hill, who slipped going for the ball, and squared for Sam Deering, but luckily for the Magpies Ronayne Marsh-Brown was on hand with an important block.

Moments later Mudge was presented with a half chance following Oxford keeper Billy Turley’s poor punch, however, the home striker failed to find the target.

On 10 minutes Jamie Guy forced Gareth Stewart into his first action of the night with a shot that the home gloveman held rather easily.

A lineman’s flag denied Moss following Crittenden’s through ball before Mudge unsuccessfully tried his luck from distance.

In the original meeting at the kassam Stadium Moss selfishly chose to shoot when the better option would have been to lay-off strike partner Mudge. And with 20 minutes gone last night Mudge capitalised on a poor back pass but instead of presenting Moss with an open goal he tried to beat Turley only for the keeper to save.

However, Mudge redeemed himself just two minutes later when he latched on to Mitchell Nicholson’s fine through pass and slotted past the onrushing Turley to the delight of the home support.

The Magpies continued to press and were moving the ball well against their higher league opponents. The two final attempts of the half came from the visitors though.

Five minutes before the break a dangerous looking header from Eddie Hutchinson was diverted away from danger by Hill before it had the potential to trouble Stewart.

Oxford’s best opportunity of the half fell to Lewis Haldane but he poked a weak effort towards Stewart from six yards after Dorchester failed to clear their lines sufficiently.

The hosts remained positive as the second half got underway and they almost forged a second goal within 45 seconds. Mudge found space 20 yards out and unleashed a fierce drive, which took a nick off Luke Foster, forcing Turley to get down to his left and palm the shot away.

Just ahead of the hour mark United were inches away from levelling. Haldane whipped in a teasing cross from the left, which Guy met only to direct his point blank header straight at the feet of Stewart.

A minute later visiting full-back James Clarke drove forward before sending a low drive narrowly past the right-hand upright.

Dorchester did not appear to be under any intense pressure from Oxford, but the away side did fashion an equaliser with 13 minutes left on the clock.

Deering’s corner was flicked on at the near post and Constable was left to fire into the top corner at the back stick.

Oxford then had appeals for a penalty dismissed by referee Brendan Malone after Constable went down under Marsh-Brown’s challenge.

With seven minutes remaining U’s Odubade beat Marsh-Brown on the left corner of the penalty area but failed to find a way past Stewart.

Time ticked by anxiously and as the game entered five minutes of added time Turley had to be quick off his line to beat Moss to Crittenden’s through ball, Clarke was lucky to see a last ditch foul on Mudge go unnoticed while a moment of panic in the home box passed just before the final whistle blew to indicate extra-time.

Dorchester won a free-kick in the first minute which was cleared to home substitute Darren Watts some 40 yards out. The teenager tried his luck and saw a dipping half-volley drop past the left post.

The Magpies’ task was made even harder six minutes later as Gleeson, already on a yellow, needlessly went through the back of Deering and received his marching orders.

As Oxford probed Stewart did well to keep out a low curler from Hutchinson before Constable blazed wide on the edge of the area.

The second 15 minutes saw Deering test Stewart from range and United go in front for the first time. In a similar fashion to their first goal, Deering’s cross was flicked on, this time by Odubade, and Trainer nodded home at the far post.

Tempers flared soon after with both Marsh-Brown and Constable being booked as a result.

Dorchester battled bravely despite their disadvantage but Odubade put an end to their cup dreams with a third United goal in the dying seconds, clipping the ball past Stewart when one-on-one.
