Devon delight after Walker double
by
Terry Spracklen
Michael Walker netted twice while Ivan Forbes notched his sixth
pre-season goal as the Magpies eased to victory against their South
West Peninsula League opponents at the GJ Churchward Memorial Ground
last night.
Jamie Mudge completed the scoring for the county town side after
Richard Whatmore had headed a consolation goal for the Devon outfit.
Last night's match was arranged in support of former Stoke Gabriel
midfielder, Lee Setter, who was seriously injured in a road accident.
Setter, who is the step-son of former Dorchester assistant-manager,
Paul Compton, broke his neck in two places and at one stage was
not expected to survive but pulled through and was in attendance
at the match with Compton.
He will however, be unable to resume his footballing career and
his day-job as an industrial roofer is also in doubt.
The incessant rain made conditions unpleasant for players and spectators
alike and the match referee opted to play just 40 minutes each way
due to the conditions.
Dorchester director of football, Shaun Brooks said: "The
weather was unbelievably bad and probably stopped 50-100 people
from coming to the game - money which would all have gone to the
funds to help with Lee's care.
"It was touch and go at one time whether he would come through
but he's up and about again which is good but obviously you can
still see the scars and the signs of the accident.
"We were only too pleased to come down and help the cause."
Dorchester opened the scoring in the same minute as they did against
AFC Bournemouth two days earlier but this time it was Michael Walker
who fired home after former Magpies' keeper Mark Coombe was unable
to intercept a Jamie Gleeson corner.
Ten minutes later, Tom Mitchell's long-range shot was parried by
Coombe and Forbes snapped up the loose ball chance.
Another Gleeson corner in the 38th minute brought the third goal
as Walker's bullet header from six yards beat Coombe.
Play was a little more even after the break and when Dave Worthington
crossed, Richard Whatmore looped a header past Nick Hutchings.
But five minutes from time, Dorch-ester restored their three-goal
advantage when substitute Mudge beat the offside trap to side-foot
past Coombe.
Brooks largely fielded a young side but was pleased with what he
saw.
He added: "We tried to get a little bit of game time into
the slightly younger lads. I thought they were terrific and some
of the football they played was excellent.
"We also gave 40 minutes to Kevin Hill, Jamie Mudge and Nick
Crittenden. It has been a useful workout and we've used it as a
little bit of a sharpener with tomorrow's game at Farnborough in
mind.
"We approached the game the right way. I thought we showed
good attitude, tried to play some super football and scored some
good goals. It's been a pleasing night's work."
