Critts' corker

Nick Crittenden's first-half screamer saw Dorchester through to
the first round of the FA Cup for the first time in eight years.
The Magpies' top scorer unleashed an unstoppable drive from all
of 25 yards to earn the county town side a trip to Oxford United
in the next round of the competition.
Dorchester manager Shaun Brooks made two changes from the 1-0 win at Eastleigh on Tuesday. Jake Smeeton, who was carried off at the Silverlake Stadium, was replaced by Ronayne Marsh-Brown at left-back while Jamie Mudge shook off a knee injury to partner Ryan Moss in attack, which meant that Darren Watts dropped to the bench.
The Magpies looked for the early initiative and almost found it eight minutes in as Crittenden drove forward before finding Moss down the right channel.
The home striker crossed low and his centre somehow found its way to Jamie Gleeson at the far post but, after taking a touch to steady himself, his shot was blocked.
A Crittenden corner was then volleyed high over the bar by Tuesday's
match winner Danny Clay as the hosts continued to press forward.
Moss fashioned his own opportunity on 13 minutes, but a deflection took the sting out his 20-yard drive and Nicky Eyre in the visiting goal gathered easily.
An off target snapshot from Roy Essandoh, former FA Cup hero for
Wycombe Wanderers, was Stortford's first goal attempt before Magpies'
keeper Gareth Stewart had to be alert to deny Danny Harris midway
through the half.
Just four minutes later though, Crittenden broke the deadlock with a memorable effort.
The midfielder picked up possession in the centre of the park, shrugged off one challenge and then unleashed a ferocious strike from 25 yards that flew past Eyre and into the top right corner.
Dorchester were now looking to strengthen their hold on proceedings and saw Wes Fogden burst through the midfield before picking out Moss, whose left-footed strike from inside the box was deflected just wide of goal.
But it was the visitors who almost grabbed an equaliser before
the half-time interval. Luckily though, Stewart got down well to
hold on to Essandoh's close-range header before Harris failed to
get sufficient connection on Jason Mason's free-kick.
The first chance of the second period fell to Mudge. Crittenden
rolled the ball back along the 18-yard line, Moss stepped over it
and Mudge hit it first time. However, the striker's effort lacked
power and Eyre saved comfortably.
Marsh-Brown then saw a miscued cross just evade the top left corner
of Eyre's goal.
Fogden was next to go close, flashing a low drive from 20 yards
inches past the far post, before Gary Bowles sent a downward header
wide from Crittenden's corner.
The Magpies maintained the pressure and were still in the ascendancy
when, on 72 minutes, Kevin Hill knocked Crittenden's free-kick back
across goal where Fogden tried an overhead effort that went high
over the top.
In the midst of Dorchester's attempts, Harris nudged goalwards
from 12 yards but only found the hands of Stewart.
But the Magpies were soon back on the offensive and Fogden again tried his luck but this time lacked power in his shot.
As the clock ticked by Stewart made a vital interception on substitute
Piers Wixom's low cross, just as Harris was ready to pounce.
Stortford introduced Danny Green, a throw-in specialist in the
mould of Stoke City's Rory Delap, and one of his throws found Peter
Dean unmarked, but he headed wide eight yards out.
Another launch from Green in stoppage time was headed out only
as far as Michael Hyem, whose volley from 20 yards found its way
through a mass of bodies but wide of Stewart's goal.
And that was it, the final whistle blew and the Magpies had booked
their place in the first round of the world's most famous domestic
cup competition.
