Stadhart stunner

Dorset Echoby Echo Reporter

Dorchester succumbed to a second half goal after playing a full part in a tightly contested Blue Square South clash, which in truth was low on quality and excitement.

The home side made a disastrous start to the season, losing their first nine matches, but they are now on the up and the Magpies, themselves on a shocking run having not won since the season opener on August 9, picked just the wrong time to arrive at Ship Lane.

Resurgent Thurrock just had the edge, but the visitors played their full part in the game, particularly in the first half.

It will not be a match, though, that will last long in the memory.

Thurrock might have taken the lead in the fourth minute when Che Stadhart ran on to Craig Hughes' ball over the top but the front man, clinical in front of goal so far this season, slid his shot straight at Gareth Stewart in the visitors' goal.

Jamie Mudge had a number of chances to break the deadlock for Dorchester, with his best effort coming from a well-worked free- kick straight from the training ground but his shot whistled narrowly wide.

Thurrock skipper Lee Flynn stung Stewart's hands from a 20-yard free-kick on 48 minutes, moments before Nick Crittenden flashed his shot over at the other end.

Thurrock began to take control of the game and came close to taking the lead in the 63rd minute as Flynn's deep free-kick was fumbled by Stewart, but the keeper recovered to make a superb save from David Bryant's close-range header.

However, the home side did not have to wait much longer as just three minutes later Stadhart ran on to Hughes' through ball and smashed his shot in off the post for his seventh goal of the campaign.

It was undoubtedly the high point of the match, though there were few other contenders.

In the 69th minute, Aaron McLeish made way for Leon McKenzie and the substitute, who has been out of the game for almost a year because of injury, almost grabbed a goal in the 82nd minute as his shot flicked over Stewart only for Gary Bowles to clear the danger.
