Groves joins 150 club as Dorchester end season
on a high
by
Ky Capel
Matt Groves got his final wish of the season – scoring his
150th goal for Dorchester Town as they ended the term with a 4-2
win over Maidenhead United.
The hit-man opened the scoring from the spot and although Sam
Collins equalised for the visitors, Ryan Moss and Jamie Gleeson
put the hosts into a commanding lead.
Substitute Alex Wall closed the gap to one with 14 minutes left
to play but a last-gasp clanger from keeper Warren Carter enabled
Moss to make the game safe.
After last week’s horror show at Lewes, boss Ashley Vickers
made six changes for the final match of the campaign.
Out went Kyle Critchell, Ollie Barnes, Harry Nodwell, Scott Brice,
James Coutts and Warren Byerley and in came Ryan Hill, Mark Jermyn,
Nathan Walker, Steve Devlin, Gleeson and Groves.
Visiting forward Kieran Knight had Regan Coward scrambling in
the fifth minute with a low drive that narrowly evaded the right-hand
upright, to which the hosts responded with a Devlin header that
just cleared the bar.
The opening 20 minutes were far from lively and certainly had
the feel of an end-of-season procession in which neither side had
much to gain, or lose.
United full-back Jack Bradshaw twice tried his luck from distance
while at the other end Carter made a meal of Ryan Hill’s
long throw but Jermyn could only lash wide under pressure.
The Dorset Magpies though, were handed the perfect opportunity
to take lead just 60 seconds later when Jamal Fyfield was adjudged
to have pulled back Gleeson in the Maidenhead box.
Up stepped Groves and he fired into the bottom left corner for
his 13th of the season and 150th in black and white.
However, the Berkshire Magpies drew level eight minutes later.
The home defence went missing following a long ball over the top
and three Maidenhead players, led by Collins, advanced towards
goal.
Neil Martin raced across the penalty area to close the man down
but his slight block appeared to deceive Coward somewhat and the
home gloveman was unable to keep the effort out.
Dorchester were almost gifted the lead once more as Ryan Hill’s
delivery was sliced inches over the top of his own goal by Bradshaw.
Maidenhead started the brighter of the two sides in the second
period and saw Knight glance a header wide before Lewis Ochoa’s
25-yard free-kick whistled past the far post.
But it was the county town outfit who next made an impact on the
scoresheet, and in empathic fashion.
Moss raced on to a searching pass and found the top corner with
a thunderous effort from the right corner of the United box.
And it was 3-1 prior to the hour. Devlin’s cross-cum-shot
was held up by Groves close to the six-yard area and he laid the
ball off to Gleeson who, on his 200th appearance for the club,
powered a shot into the roof of the net.
A weak header back from Bradley Quamina, in the 74th minute, almost
gifted Devlin an easy goal but he was let off the hook.
And Quamina was afforded an even bigger smile moments later as
his side cut the deficit. Substitute Bobby Behzadi picked out fellow
replacement Wall and the latter comfortably beat Coward from close
range.
Maidenhead rarely threatened an equaliser and ended the game two
adrift following a howler from Carter.
There appeared to be no danger when the keeper came to collect
on the edge of his box but he failed to gather the ball sufficiently
and Moss took full advantage to join Groves at the top of this
season’s chart with 13. |
