Magpies continue to soar
by
Ky Capel
Dorchester Town made it eight home games without defeat in Blue
Square South thanks to a goal apiece from their leading frontmen.
Ryan Moss opened the scoring five minutes before the break, aided
by a superb piece of skill from the returning Nick Crittenden,
while Matt Groves bagged his second penalty in as many games to
secure victory against Bishop’s Stortford.
And the win, Dorchester’s ninth of the league campaign,
lifts Ashley Vickers’ side up to 15th in the table and 12
points clear of the relegation zone.
The Magpies made three changes to the side that started last week’s
draw with Welling United. Groves, who scored a last-gasp spot-kick
at Park View Road, and fellow forward Moss renewed their partnership
up front while Crittenden overcame a recent ankle injury to replace
Jamie Gleeson.
The visitors meanwhile, named former county town man Jon Docker
in their line-up.
After a fairly pedestrian opening, it took 13 minutes for the
first moment of action to arrive.
Docker nodded on for lone frontman Danny Morgan and he poked past
home keeper Regan Coward, however, the linesman’s flag came
to the Magpies’ rescue.
Crittenden put the visiting defence under the microscope with
two dangerous crosses before Docker drilled wide from 20 yards
in the 19th minute.
Dorchester registered their first attempt three minutes shy of
the half-hour but after Stortford gloveman Nick Morgan flapped
at a Mark Jermyn centre, Steve Devlin couldn’t quite adjust
his body and his effort flew over.
After 40 rather dull minutes at the Avenue Stadium, a moment of
magic from the returning Crittenden helped break the deadlock.
The Dorchester winger produced a classy flick in the right corner
to leave two Stortford defenders trailing in his wake, before digging
out a neat delivery which was met by the head of Moss and squeezed
into the bottom corner.
The away side had the perfect opportunity to go into the half-time
break level but after a neat through pass from Docker, Danny Morgan
lifted the ball over Coward only to see his effort drop wide of
the right-hand post.
The second half started in stark contrast to the first. Just 20
seconds in and the Magpies were awarded a penalty – you wait
a year for one and two come along in successive matches.
Moss was brought down by Stevland Angus and Groves fired the resultant
spot-kick straight down the middle, just like he did in the last
minute at Welling.
Bishop’s Stortford went in search of an immediate reply
but a crucial tackle from Gary Bowles denied Bertie Brayley a clean
sight of goal.
The visitors rarely threatened after that while the Magpies brought
on Warren Byerley for his first home appearance since returning
to the county town club.
And the substitute forced a regulation save out of Nick Morgan
before teeing up Crittenden, whose 20-yard drive was diverted away
for a corner by the Stortford keeper.
That was to be Crittenden’s final contribution as he limped
off moments later.
Jermyn went close soon after while in the last minute of normal
time a Devlin corner was flicked on by replacement striker Jules
Emati-Emati but then nodded over by the onrushing Nathan Walker.
