Whitnall wins it for Welling

Dorset Echoby Ky Capel

A late strike from Tom Whitnall inflicted a first home defeat of the season on Dorchester Town and put a damper on Shaun Hearn’s new era as chairman.

The Magpies entered the game unbeaten at the Jewson Stadium this term while Welling arrived in Dorset with just one point from a possible 15 on the road.

However, the form book was thrown out of the window as a lacklustre Dorchester fell behind to Yado Mambo’s 10th minute header.

Matt Groves equalised with his 140th goal for the club but Whitnall’s effort five minutes from time stole the spoils on the same day that Hearn secured his takeover of the county town outfit.

After the win in midweek, Magpies’ chief Roy O’Brien named an unchanged XI for the visit of the Wings, with the only change seeing Mark Jermyn replace Harry Nodwell on the substitutes’ bench.

Welling’s form on the road has been miserable to say the least but they were first to register a shot at the Jewson Stadium – Jake Hobbs firing wide from the right-hand corner of the Magpies’ box.

However, eight minutes later Hobbs turned provider as his dangerous cross from the right was headed home by the oncoming Mambo, on work experience from Charlton Athletic, to end United’s run of four-games without a goal.

Having picked the ball out of his own goal with his first touch, Ryan Northmore’s second was a low save from Tony Finn, after the visiting striker created space to shoot inside the penalty area.

Matters soon took another turn for the worse for Dorchester as winger Ivan Forbes pulled up unchallenged, clutching his hamstring, and had to be replaced as a result.

The Magpies though, not wanting to feel sorry for themselves, did force opposition keeper Charlie Mitten into action just two minutes later with Neil Martin’s cross-cum-shot requiring a helping hand over the top.

A soft header back to Mitten almost gave Groves a clean sight of goal before the same man was denied by Mambo’s crucial intervention following Nick Crittenden’s low centre.

At the other end, Finn profited from Ollie Barnes’ hesitancy but saw his shot from eight yards diverted out for a corner.

Barnes made up for his error by providing the assist for Dorchester’s equaliser five minutes before the break.

Crittenden’s corner found its way to the towering centre-half and he drilled the ball goalwards with Groves getting the final touch to claim his third goal of the season and 140th in a Dorchester shirt.

And the poaching frontman went close to netting his 141st moments later, only for his glancing header from Crittenden’s centre to drop narrowly wide of the far post.

Dorchester’s confidence was rising and even Ashley Vickers tried his luck with an acrobatic effort, but to no avail, ahead of the half-time whistle.

Finn issued an early warning sign in the second period with a fierce 20-yard drive while Mitten got down well keep out Crittenden’s volley.

Northmore created panic amongst the home fans when he charged out of his area but failed to clear the ball. The Magpies’ keeper though, escaped unpunished.

Dorchester should have been ahead in the 65th minute but Jamie Gleeson, just 12 yards out, fired Ryan Moss’ pull back over the top.

The visitors were presented with a good chance themselves soon after. Defender Steve King was the culprit this time as he headed straight at Northmore.

With 10 minutes to go Welling substitute Stefan Gaise looked odds on to score after Whitnall had dummied Finn’s low cross from the right.

However, vital pressure from Barnes put Gaise off his stride.

Welling, like Dorchester, came into the game without an away win this season. But they ended that statistic with an 85th minute winner.

A delivery into the Magpies’ penalty area wasn’t dealt with sufficiently and Whitnall lashed the loose ball into the roof of the net.

And there was still time for Gaise to drag an effort wide when put through by Finn.
