Error-strewn

Dorset Echoby Ky Capel

Shaun Brooks believes poor defending cost his side in their 3-2 defeat at Newport County today.

Dorchester went a goal down to Craig Hughes' strike, but Charlie Henry pulled the visitors back on level terms before County raced into a 3-1 lead as Charlie Griffin hit two goals in as many minutes.

Jamie Gleeson's 51st minute strike gave the Magpies hope but the Welsh side held on for the three points and stay third in the table. Both sides were reduced to 10 men as Dorchester's Nathan Simpson and Newport's Jason Bowen were dismissed together for collecting two yellows each.

Speaking after the loss director of football Brooks said: "When you come away from home and score two goals you expect to get something out of the game but three defensive errors have cost us.

"It was always going to be a tough game, and we made it harder by giving ourselves a mountain to climb at half-time. We gave ourselves a chance with a great effort from Jamie, and then we went in search of an equaliser but unfortunately it wasn't to be."

The county town outfit welcomed new signing Dani Rodrigues to their starting line-up but even he couldn't inspire the Magpies to their first Blue Square South win in seven weeks. Brooks was happy with the display of his new man.

He added: "Dani was excellent, he played the whole 90 minutes and showed a great willingness to work hard. He is a major plus in our side with his character and ability.

"We do still need some more experienced heads in the side and the search continues. The top teams are the ones with the experienced squads and at the moment they are on a different level to us."

Other players to get a mention were Wes Fogden and Henry, the former playing what could be his last game for the Avenue Stadium side.

Brooks said: "Wes was very competitive again today and I'm hoping to extend his loan deal when I speak to Brighton's manager Dean Wilkins. Charlie was a threat all game, his end product was a lot better than it has been and he took his goal well."

Dorchester were spared the embarrassment of occupying one of the three relegation spots by a last-gasp equaliser from Jon Stevenson, which saw St Albans share the spoils with Bognor Regis. Goal difference keeps Brooks' men in 19th place, somewhere the Magpies' boss doesn't expect the club to be for much longer.

He added: "The way we performed in the second half was good, and the result shows we have nothing to fear in this league. I'm confident we'll start to turn the corner, we just need to stay in games for the full 90 minutes to help give us a chance of getting something."

Gleeson came off worse in a clash of heads with County skipper Steve Jenkins late on in the match, and was taken to Royal Gwent Hospital. But the midfield man has since been discharged and given the okay.
