Coaching return for Holmes?
by
Ky Capel
Former fans' favourite Matty Holmes could make a return to Dorchester
Town as part of the club's coaching staff.
The 38-year-old, who spent four years as player-coach with the
Magpies after joining in 2000, is well respected by the Avenue Stadium
faithful and director of football Shaun Brooks.
And with an FA Coaching Badge already on his CV, Holmes could see
Dorchester as the perfect place to step up from the soccer schools
he runs in the Dorset and Hampshire areas.
The ex-Magpie is set to appear in the county town today to watch
Brooks' men in action against Bromley (3pm) in a game that club
owner Eddie Mitchell has targeted with the Bring a Friend' initiative.
Should the attendance reach 1,000 Mitchell has promised to reimburse
all tickets purchased on the day.
Attending with his family, Holmes is expected to make the draw
that will see one lucky supporter win a pair of Premier League tickets
at Portsmouth, plus £100 cash or the choice of a Dorchester
season ticket.
The former Charlton Athletic and West Ham player, who also featured
for Blackburn Rovers during their Premier League title-winning season
of 1994/95 and made two Champions League appearances in the following
campaign, is believed to be interested in hosting a mini-soccer
tournament at the ground in the near future.
After his playing career in the higher reaches of English League
football was ended by a tackle from Kevin Muscat, the midfielder
dropped down into non-League football with Dorchester and took up
the combined roles of player and coach.
And Holmes will be sure to bring a wealth of experience and know-how
on to the Magpies' training ground should a deal materialise.
