Magpies facing Bognor battle
by
Ky Capel
Dorchester Town have the chance to put Saturday's disappointing
defeat to Bromley firmly behind them as they welcome struggling
Bognor Regis Town to the Avenue Stadium tonight (7.45pm).
The Magpies were coasting at 2-0 going into the break at the weekend,
but three goals in 11 minutes saw a remarkable comeback from the
visitors.
And with only one win from six home games in Blue Square South,
director of football Shaun Brooks will be looking for a reaction
from his players.
He said: "Everyone's disappointed after the Bromley game and
I'm expecting a reaction against Bognor. Having said that we are
creating chances and scoring goals, it's just that our defending
isn't as good as it has been in the past.
"Our energy and understanding has improved in recent games,
as has our forward play, we just need to go back to being more resolute."
Tonight's visitors lie in the relegation zone with just seven points
from 12 games. Brooks though, isn't expecting an easy game against
a side he knows well.
The Magpies' boss added: "Every game is a big game. I know
Jack Pearce, their general manager, very well and I have a lot of
respect for him. He brings a belief of playing good football to
every team he's involved with.
"Bognor got a good point at Newport on the weekend so we will
have to be on the mettle if we want to get anything out of the game."
Pearce though, after more than 1,500 games in the hot seat stepped
aside as team manager following Saturday's draw to fulfil a more
background role, allowing Michael Birmingham to take over as care-taker
with Darin Killpartrick as his assistant.
If Magpies' fans think their home record is bad they should take
a look at the Rocks' predicament, six defeats from six. All seven
of their league points have come away from Nyweood Lane and Brooks'
men will have to be wary ahead of tonight's clash.
Although playing their second game in a short space of time Brooks
is unlikely to make wholesale changes.
He said: "I'll have a look at everyone ahead of the game in
terms of fitness but I don't want to make changes for the sake of
it. There were some good, and some bad, performances on Saturday,
we just need to reach a better level of consis-tency."
One player who has undoubtedly improved the look of the side and
set an example with his work-rate is loan signing Wes Fogden.
The Brighton youngster has impressed since joining on a month's
stay. And Brooks is keen to extend the 19-year-old's spell at the
Avenue.
He said: "Wes is a feisty character and, unlike a lot of players
at his age, has a great understanding of the game.
"I will speak to Brighton's manager Dean Wilkins this week
and if there's a possibility of keeping Wes longer then we will
do so."
