Senior to leave Town Under-18s

Western Gazetteby Howard Milton

Dorchester Town under-18s will carry on next season despite receiving no financial backing from the club. But they will be without Trevor Senior.

General-manager Phil Basford had been informed by club owner Eddie Mitchell he would not back the team financially, which means team boss Senior will leave at the end of the current campaign.

"Trevor will not be carrying on because I cannot afford to pay him," said Basford.

"He has had minimal amounts for doing it because coaching is part of his job anyway but he has not been paid since Christmas because the owners did not recognise he was part of the club in the first place.

"Eddie has no problem with us carrying on the team but we have to raise our own finances. We worked out we need £4,000 to run for next season.

"We intend to stay in the South West Counties Youth League for next season. The Dorset County Youth League is not what we are looking for.

"The other thing is the lads have a social life and they go out on a Saturday night.

"You never know what they are going to be like on a Sunday morning. For the development of players, the South West Counties is the right league.

"I will have under-16 manager (and former Dorchester and Torquay United forward) Robbie Taylor assisting me and taking over Trevor's role for next season.

"Robbie has been running the team for the last three years and they were county-cup finalists this season.

"Running the under-18s is worthwhile. I fought hard to get the team off the ground. The club are a little shortsighted at the moment but things change in football."

Not running the team next season could have long-term and potentially-damaging repercussions for the club as a whole, according to Basford.

"The first team could be playing the likes of Tiverton Town next season in the Southern League Premier Division," he said.

"They have a first team, reserves and under-18 side - and if a club like that, and Hamworthy United, can finance an under-18 side, it will be pretty poor if we cannot.

"If we cannot carry on the team, there will be nowhere for Dorchester-based lads with ability to go. The better lads will go and play for Weymouth and Hamworthy.

"And the club (Dorchester) as a whole would have to buy in players.

As part of the fund-raising, Basford is planning a patrons' draw. For more details, telephone 01305 269711 or 07966 507149 or e-mail dtfcunder18team@aol.com
