Magpies boss set to wield the axe
The Magpies lost 1-0 to play-off chasing Braintree Town at the Jewson Stadium where Alex Browne's second-half own goal handed all three points to the visitors. Director of football Brooks said: "We near enough know who we're going to keep and who we are going to release, and we'll meet with the players next Tuesday. "I do believe we have a good nucleus but need a bit of experience and know-how alongside the young ones. We've been aware for a long time what's been needed and we'll have to work within our budget but we need to bounce straight back next season." Of last night's defeat, which scuppers any feint hopes of finishing above Weston-super-Mare in the Blue Square South, Brooks added: "It's always disappointing to lose a game of football, it just highlights what we need and that is a big target player to play off. "Every side in the league has some presence up front and we need that but we also need to strengthen in other areas too. "It's the end of a long campaign at home and we have to do better next season." Following a dire first half spectacle Brooks introduced Ivan Forbes and Darren Watts to the action for the second period. And the replacement duo came in for praise. Brooks said: "Darren and Ivan injected energy, tempo and pace into the side. Darren was excellent, his passing was good and he looked after the ball. With Ivan you always have a threat but he just needs to calm down and work on his final product. "After injecting some urgency I thought we matched Braintree in the second half without looking like scoring which is the story of our season." Indeed it is with just 35 goals scored in 41 league games, a record only worsened by rock-bottom Sutton United.
