Torquay United's Kevin Hill could be joining Dorchester on loan but Paul Compton insists a deal is yet to be finalised.

The Magpies' assistant-manager, and former Gulls' boss, told Echosport: "There has been an inquiry but I can't say any more than that.

"The deal isn't done and dusted, I'm still talking to Torquay.

"Kevin is the kind of player we've been talking about and I know him personally. I was at Torquay for 20 years so I've called in a few favours as well."

And the midfield man whose been a Torquay player for more than a decade could be the perfect tonic to rejuvenate a Dorchester side who lost 2-0 last night in a friendly match at Portland United.

The game, played in strong winds, was a tight affair with few chances all game. The best opportunity for the visitors fell to Mitchell Nicholson but he shot wide from a tight angle when through on goal.

The Dorset Premier League outfit saw the better of the play in the second period and made their pressure count with a goal 13 minutes from time.

After seeing Dorchester Under-18's keeper Regan Coward push his first header over the bar from a corner 30 seconds earlier, Adam Anstey rose to nod home from the subsequent corner.

And in the final minute of the game John Lamb pounced on a defensive error to pull the ball back for Danny Asplin to fire past Coward.

On a positive note for the county town side, Under-18 full-backs Chris Clarke and Alan Hill put in solid displays to stake a claim as future first-team squad members.

In defeat Compton added: "The game served its purpose, Alex Browne had a whole game, a few lads from the Under-18s came in and played well and Danny Clay got more minutes under his belt."

The Magpies had just one trialist on show last night, striker Denilson who featured in the 0-0 friendly draw with Salisbury City last week.

Compton said: "Myself and Shaun Brooks were both trying to get trialists in but we were unsure whether the game was going to go ahead and at the end of the day it wasn't worth committing ourselves to bringing those players down.

"The only one we had was Denilson but he came off injured early on which is unfortunate."

Meanwhile Portland boss Dave Kiteley was delighted with the attitude of his players.

He said: "The work rate and attitude of our players is second to none, even in friendlies. It's always good to play teams from a higher league because you find your level and ways of improving.

"The lads just keep answering every question that is being asked of them.

"The difference between the two sides at the moment is that, although Dorchester are from a higher league, we know how to win and they can't buy one at the moment."
