Scoreline 'fair' in Magpies' loss

Western Gazetteby Howard Milton

Dorchester Town's under-18s were beaten 4-1 at leaders City Academy Bristol on Saturday in South West Counties Youth League Division Two - but felt the scoreline was "fair".

The visitors started well and Dan Jones put them ahead. But the hosts, attached to Coca-Cola Championship high-fliers Bristol City, roared back.

"We were never in it after the goal," admitted Magpies' general manager Phil Basford, who missed the game.

"It sounds like it could have been another Aldershot Town hammering (Dorchester lost 14-1) but City could not hit the target. They have not lost in the league but our lads did not stop. All of them except the likes of Chris Clark, Jack Dale and Regan Coward were first-year players so 4-1 was a fair result."

Basford believes Town's involvement in the league is not focused solely on getting results, especially with Jamie Morgan and Clark interesting first-team assistant-manager Paul Compton.

"Winning is nice but not the be all and end all," said Basford. "They have to come and learn something from playing in this league and, we hope, go on to play at a higher standard."
