Town face titanic tussle at Sutton
by
Howard Milton
Writing on a Sutton United message board this week,
one fan of the Surrey outfit described Saturday's visit to Dorchester
Town as "the biggest league game for years" - and it is not hard
to see why.
Both sides need points desperately from the Jewson Stadium clash as they battle against relegation from Blue Square South.
United are level with Dorchester on 19 points but in the basement slot by virtue of an inferior goal-difference and have played a game more than their second-bottom hosts.
Both are being cast adrift at the foot of the league as the gap between third-bottom St Albans City and Welling United - who are in the first safety position - has widened to four points.
Sutton gave what many saw as one of their best performances for a while by holding Eastleigh to a 0-0 draw at Gander Green Lane last weekend.
And manager Ernie Howe, who took on the job following the resignation of Ian Hazel, believes his side have nothing to lose.
"We are aiming to go out and get at sides now to try to force the issue," he said. "We have to go and see what happens."
United will come to Dorset with a youthful side, smattered with some experience such as central-defender John Scarborough and midfielder Bashiru Alimi. Former Dorch trialist Uzo Opara is also expected to feature in the squad.
Howe, who has been in charge since October, has signed striker Steffan Ball from Ramsgate and keeper Kevin Davies from Hayes & Yeading. But he was expected to lose the services of striker Warren McBean on a temporary basis to Eastleigh this week.
The Magpies are due to travel to Havant & Waterlooville in the league on Monday.
