Magpies moving in the right direction

Western Gazetteby Howard Milton

Poole Town maintained their hold over Dorchester Town counterparts with a 1-0 South West Counties Youth League Division One win at the Recreation Ground, Weymouth Avenue, on Saturday.

With the reverse, the Magpies have lost three and drawn one from the four meetings between the sides this season. The crucial goal at the weekend came in the first half.

At the other end, Charlie Lee fired a shot against the bar and Ryan Chance and Jamie Morgan came close to getting the hosts on the scoresheet.

Dorch general manager Phil Basford was left to rue his side's bad luck.

"We played some really pleasing football," he said. "We could not fault the lads' effort but on another day the shot that hit the bar would have gone in.

"However, things are moving in the right direction. The lads are playing more as a team than they have done previously.

"The likes of Alan Hill have moved to centre-back recently - and if they are to develop, they have to prove they can be versatile and can play in another part of the field."

Dorchester take part in two rearranged League Cup fixtures during the next two weeks. They host Forest Green Rovers on Saturday and travel to Broadway Academy on 26 January.
