Just pitiful

Dorset Echoby Ky Capel

Magpies' assistant-manager Paul Compton insisted there will be wholesale changes at Dorchester following a "pitiful" performance as they lost 3-0 at home to fellow strugglers St Albans City.

A Mark Jermyn own goal, plus strikes from City players Marcel McKie and Simon Martin christened an awful debut for the newly named Jewson Stadium, which also saw Alex Browne don the gloves after half an hour in place of the injured Simon Evans.

Compton admitted he and director of football Shaun Brooks have lost their patience. Speaking after the game he said: "It was absolutely not good enough, there will be a totally different side out there next week.

"Shaun will be meeting with the club's owner Eddie Mitchell because we can't protect the players anymore. Looking at the game you never would have thought it was a proverbial six-pointer.

"We've got one or two players lined up for next week who couldn't play today because the club involved were unable to let them go this weekend.

"Shaun and I have lost patience because the players are not taking things on board so we've got to make changes. We haven't had a go at the players before in the Press but today was just pitiful.

"We didn't get going and it was easy to see that, you could also see that St Albans were fighting for their lives whereas we looked as though we were top of the league the way some of them were strutting around."

And Compton refused to use the loss of Evans as an excuse for their demise.

He added: "You can look back and say we lost our only goalkeeper to injury but that's got nothing to do with it.

"Alex couldn't be faulted for his efforts, he along with the likes of Jermyn and Roy O'Brien I feel sorry for, some of the younger lads need to have a good look at themselves.

"Shaun and I are devastated by what's happened, especially after the chat we had with the players following the Eastbourne game on Tuesday night. There just doesn't seem to be any self pride in some of the players.

"Eddie Mitchell is taking flack from all corners of the public regarding the way he is running the club but he gave these lads a chance to fulfil a dream."

Despite dropping to 21st in the league, three points from safety with 17 games to go, the former Weymouth boss did manage to find one positive.

He said: "The only good thing is that we have enough games to turn it around so we will do everything possible. It might take a performance like that to really make things happen.

"It's infuriating because the passion from some players was absolutely nil, I wish I could have been out there myself playing, and that is the reason why they aren't at professional clubs anymore."
