Critts aims high

Dorset Echoby Ky Capel

Nick Crittenden is aiming high in his beliefs of what Dorchester Town can achieve this coming season.

The midfielder joined the Magpies last month and started pre-season training with his new team-mates last week.

Despite the club finishing 21st last season and only avoiding relegation through a late reprieve, Crittenden believes Dorchester should be ambitious ahead of the new campaign.

He said: "I've never played at Conference South level but I know there are some good sides out there.

"The overall goal is for us to push towards the play-offs. We can't just set out as if we are going to be a bottom half team - you have got to be positive.

"With them staying up, and me not wanting to move away from Yeovil, it was an ideal move.

"Hopefully with that luck, and after a disappointing season, they'll be going upwards now.

"It's a fresh start and a new challenge is always welcome. I've played at the ground before while at Yeovil and I enjoyed playing there, it's a nice pitch.

"They didn't have to sell the club to me, it was an ideal opportunity."

The 29-year-old signed a two-year deal with the county town side after leaving local rivals Weymouth at the end of last season.

Speaking of his departure from the Wessex Stadium, Crittenden added: "When a new manager comes in they tend to like their own players and sometimes that's the way it goes in football, you just have to pick yourself up and get on with playing.

"More importantly, you need to be enjoying football - you play your best when you are."

The former Terra is keen to follow in the footsteps of ex-Weymouth defenders Roy O'Brien and Alex Browne, who have both previously made the move north of the Ridgeway.

He said: "I was aware of the rivalry but it hasn't really crossed my mind. Roy's gone from Weymouth to Dorchester, as has Alex, and the fans here like both of them so hopefully I can do the same."

Crittenden made 44 appearances for the Terras last season despite suffering with injuries.

He added: "I had a few injuries last season, not too many but they seemed to occur at the wrong time. Hopefully now though I'm back at 100 per cent, I can't see why not."

Crittenden could be in line for his first appearance tomorrow night when the Magpies visit Wessex League outfit Ringwood Town in a friendly (7.45pm).

He added: "I've really been looking forward to pre-season. I'd been off for two months and just wanted to get back into the swing of it again.

"The pre-season training is so important, the better the pre-season you have the better you feel after Christmas when your fitness begins to show."
