Magpies' wings clipped by the Blues

Dorchester were brought back to Earth with a bump as a makeshift
side lost 1-0 at Portland United last night.
The Magpies drew 1-1 with a Portsmouth XI on Monday night but were
beaten by an early strike from Adam Linaker at Grove Corner.
Dorchester boss Shaun Brooks watched on as a team of fringe players
and trialists lost out to the Dorset Premier League champions.
He said: "Playing back to back games is difficult but we should
still have had enough quality - the final ball though was poor.
For any lads who were getting ideas above their station this should
be a good grounding for them. We had a lot of possession but no
quality to break Portland down."
Of those on trial, only Leon Osei and keeper Michael McEntagart
look set to secure deals with the Magpies.
Brooks added: "We've spoken to Leon and we're just waiting
for him to get back to us. Michael did okay, he got caught out for
the goal although it was a great finish. I'd like to see him on
Saturday at Sherborne and talk to him at the start of next week.
"We might keep tabs on the others but at the moment it's
a case of thanks but no thanks. We have got to keep looking at players
in case we pull one out of the pack as we haven't got strength in
depth."
Blues' manager Dave Kiteley was happy with the display of his men.
He said: "Results are irrelevant in pre-season, I was just
pleased with the work-rate. Dorchester had a good athletic side
and they moved the ball around well.
"What's impressed me most is that the lads got their defensive
positioning right straight away. We held a good shape, were disciplined
and scored a good goal.
"We've got to do this week in week out, not just against the
likes of Dorchester and Weymouth."
After Portland stopper Warren Boyt had kept out Mitchell Nicholson's
drive the ball was soon at the other end of the pitch and in the
back of Dorchester's net.
Ross Doidge's header, from Boyt's kick, fell to Linaker who spotted
McEntagart in no man's land and lobbed him midway in the Magpies'
half in the 13th minute.
Dorchester trialist Bill Puckett's evening came to an abrupt when
he was stretchered off on 27 minutes after lengthy treatment to
a knee injury and he was later taken to hospital.
The visitors had the perfect opportunity to equalise two minutes
before the break when Akim was brought down by Andy Perkins in the
box and a penalty was awarded.
However, Nicholson's spot kick was too central, enabling Boyt to
get down and make the save.
Six minutes into the second period, Doidge was fouled by Osei 25
yards out and took the resulting kick, but his effort was tipped
over by McEntagart.
Chances were scarce for either side until, in the 70th minute,
gloveman Regan Coward, playing for Portland after Boyt picked up
a knock, rushed off his line to deny Nathan Peprah-Annan.
With a minute left, Alex Browne was penalised for handball on the
edge of the area. Doidge stepped up but saw his strike go narrowly
over the top.
