Ambitious Clay looks to future

Dorset Echoby Ky Capel

Midfielder Danny Clay has revealed that the ambition shown by Shaun Brooks and Eddie Mitchell played a big part in his decision to sign a permanent deal with the Magpies.

Clay joined the county town side on loan for the latter stages of last season, which saw Dorchester finish in the relegation zone with just 34 points from 42 games.

But following the Magpies' reprieve from relegation, manager Brooks has made positive moves ahead of the upcoming campaign.

Clay, whose signed a two-year deal at the Jewson Stadium, said: "My time at the club last season wasn't great in the sense that we were relegated but I liked the club and the players I played with.

"We gelled at the end of the season but when I first joined we were rather leaky in defence and conceded a lot, however, we shored up, and had we scored more then we might have got out of the relegation zone.

"But after the club was reprieved and hearing Shaun's plans it helped make my mind up. Eddie and Shaun are looking at a top half finish and maybe a view of pushing towards the play-offs.

"The club's learnt an awful lot. It was always going to be hard going into the league with a lot of younger players but with the signings made already, and those they are hoping to make, it bodes well for next season.

"We lost a lot of the fans towards the end of the season but hopefully with the signings we've made, and the reprieve, they'll see the ambition we have."

Having played alongside Alex Browne last season, Clay believes his appointment as assistant-manager will prove worthwhile.

He added: "Alex is a really good clubman, and we need him around for his experience. I think he'll have a big influence this coming season."

The Magpies' players are back in training a week today and Clay is already eyeing certain dates of the club's pre-season calendar.

He said: "The friendlies will come thick and fast but I'm looking forward to them, especially the ones against Weymouth and Bournemouth."
