Chico out to save Magpies

Dorset Echoby Ky Capel

Francisco Ramos admits the Magpies are fighting for their lives in Blue Square South but is quietly confident they have what it takes to escape relegation.

The Portuguese keeper, who joined the county town outfit last month from Maidenhead United, helped Dorchester claim a draw at promotion hopefuls Fisher Athletic on Saturday, a point that could prove crucial in their bid to beat the drop.

Ramos, whose nickname is Chico, said: "The draw is a massive result for us. Fisher went into the game with nine wins from 11 league games but we played well and defended well. Everyone played their part because at the moment we are fighting for our lives to avoid relegation.

"It's a big confidence boost and one which keeps everyone going. The only disappointment was that St Albans beat Weston-super-Mare but we are still there with a chance and it's not going to be easy for any team who plays us.

"The side we have is very young but they all want to play and they're all talented. We've been improving lately and that is a good sign.

"We play Bognor Regis this Satur-day and that is a big game. Bognor like to play the ball around so hopefully it will be a good game in that respect. The match I'm obviously really looking forward to is against Maidenhead on March 15."

Ramos is one of three Dorchester squad members whose played for rivals Weymouth. And since arriving at the Jewson Stadium the 24-year-old has quickly found his feet.

The former Benfica stopper added: "Building an understanding with my team-mates hasn't been difficult, however, it's not been easy. I need to make sure I get everyone in front of me organised and make sure they listen to me and respect me, which they have done so far.

"Trust is also crucial, defenders must trust their keeper and I feel I'm building that trust.

"I know Roy O'Brien from my time at Weymouth and he is a great person to have in front of you because of his experience. Patrece Liburd, who played alongside Roy, also looks good. It's always difficult playing in your first game for a club because anything can happen but Patrece was strong on Saturday."
