Cup spirit can conquer all

Dorset Echoby Ky Capel

Director of football Shaun Brooks is urging his players to treat every game as a "cup final" starting with tomorrow's clash against Maidenhead United at the Jewson Stadium (3pm).

The Dorset Magpies take on the Berkshire Magpies desperately searching for all three points in the bid to beat the Blue Square South drop.

Brooks' men sit five points adrift of safety but despite having home advantage tomorrow, the county town boss is wary of United's impressive away record.

Maidenhead have won 26 of their 34 points away from York Road. Brooks said: "It's as important as any game is going to be for us now. We go into it full of confidence but we need to start picking up points.

"We are in the best shape we have been for a while but we still need to perform and work hard because Maidenhead have got a very good away record.

"We have to view every game as a cup final. I was pleased with our last two performances at Bognor Regis and Fisher but we need to start closing the gap on the teams above us.

"Our fans haven't had a lot to cheer about but when we've played well at home they've been 100 per cent behind us, so the onus is on us to give them something to cheer."

After gaining two resolute points away from home, Brooks is hoping his side can improve on their recent strike rate of just three goals scored in their last seven games.

He added: "Without going gung-ho and leaving ourselves open we need to be controlled but also on the front foot and look to impose our personality on the game. We do need to be a bit more offensive than we have of late and I have every confidence we will put in a good performance."

Dorchester keeper Francisco Ramos, nicknamed Chico, will come face to face with the club who released him last month.

Brooks said: "I've spoken to Chico and he is really looking forward to the game as he's got a point to prove. Maidenhead let him go and it's been our gain.

"If you take the Havant & Waterlooville game out of the equation we have only conceded three goals in four games and Chico has had a big part to play in that."

Town welcome striker Eric Manangu back from a two-game suspension but lose defender Gary Bowles to the same punishment.

Ivan Forbes and Jon Docker are pushing for a starting place but Brooks is expected to name an unchanged line-up for the third successive game.
