Second chance

Dorset Echoby Ky Capel

Shaun Brooks believes Saturday's abandoned game should have been called off earlier than with just four minutes left to play.

Dorchester were drawing 1-1 at home to Maidenhead United until referee Andrew Coggings brought to an end a match that was more suited to water polo as the afternoon went by.

The Blue Square South fixture has now been rearranged for Tuesday, April 1.

And the county town director of football will be delighted with another chance to take all three points in the desperate fight against relegation.

He said: "I've never known a game to be called off with only four minutes to go.

"The decision to call it off could have been made earlier, probably 15 or 20 minutes into the second half because the ball was sticking in puddles, tackles were flying in and it became unplayable.

"We are pleased to have a chance to play Maidenhead again as we want another go at getting the three points and that's what we need in the situation we are in."

The Magpies' situation was made even worse by victories for Welling United and St Albans City. The two sides now lead Dorchester by eight and seven points respectively.

Brooks though, was pleased with the display of his players in such difficult conditions and is confident they can dig themselves out of the bottom three with nine games to go.

He added: "In the second half I thought we were fantastic, we were a lot stronger and if one side was going to win the game I felt it would have been us as we were on the front foot.

"No one can complain about our performance, and if we can keep playing with the same energy and commitment then we will win games.

"Maidenhead's need for points isn't as great as ours so we would definitely like another bash at them. We need to be getting three points from games but we can't work much harder than we have been to get them. Our form in the last three games has been excellent."

Mark Jermyn was left on the bench for Saturday's clash and replaced by Jon Docker, who scored Dorchester's equaliser with a precisely taken free-kick.

Brooks said: "It was purely a tactical decision. We wanted to be more attacking at home and I thought Jon was behind the majority of our best play, and he took his goal well."
