Docker's steep learning curve

Dorset Echoby Ky Capel

Jon Docker admits it has taken a while to adjust to Blue Square South football but believes the Magpies have what it takes to stay up.

The midfield man has been in and out of the starting line-up in recent weeks but was present for all of the 86 minutes played in last Saturday's abandoned fixture against Maidenhead United, where he scored a beautifully taken free-kick.

The 21-year-old though, understood why he was being left on the substitutes' bench.

He said: "I was suspended for the game at Fisher at the start of the month, the boys got a good draw there so it's fair enough that the same side was picked again at Bognor Regis.

"I came on in that game and played well and I knew that if I trained hard then I would get my chance. Sometimes when you're not in the side you do take a look at yourself and wonder why but this time I know it was down to how well the other lads were doing.

"It was pleasing to play and score last Saturday even though it doesn't count now. However, a point wouldn't have been enough for us so it's good that we have another chance against Maidenhead."

The Magpies picked up half their current points tally of 22 by mid-September, and Docker believes this campaign has been a steep learning curve.

He added: "We're quite a young side who beat St Albans City 3-0 on the opening day of the season. At that point we probably thought that we would push on and maybe finish in the top six but we've been shocked.

"I think it's taken us a while to find out what the league is about, however, I'm confident we'll stay up and if we do then next year we will be a stronger team.

"It's a shame that we are coming strong so late in the season, I hope it's not too late. But I do believe we have enough games left to turn it around."

The county town outfit welcome Basing-stoke Town to the Jewson Stadium on Saturday before travelling to Weston-super-Mare on Easter Monday - two sides without a league win in eight games.

Docker said: "We've just got to go into the games thinking we can win them. Two wins over Easter and we'll be in a great position. Weston have a game in hand over us but they aren't safe yet."

Meanwhile, director of football Shaun Brook says no decision has been made on the trialists who featured in Tuesday's friendly defeat at Torquay, or on Nathan Peprah-Annan who is back training with the Magpies.

Three of the new faces were Portsmouth Academy duo Jon Page and Joe Oastler, and former Maidenhead United forward Serge Makofo.

Brooks said: "We are hoping to arrange a fixture next week to have another look at them. With the academy players we must wait until they have completed their exit trials and hope that they are not snapped up by a League club."

Welling United increased the pressure on Dorchester in the fight against relegation by winning 1-0 at play-off chasing Newport County last night.

Sam Gargan scored the only goal of the game to lift the Wings above Weston-super-Mare. The Magpies are now nine points from safety.
