Magpies seek back-to-back victories

Dorset Echoby Ky Capel

Shaun Brooks believes the opening stages of today's relegation battle at Weston-super-Mare (3pm) could determine whether the Magpies register back-to-back wins for the first time since September.

Dorchester defeated Basingstoke Town at the Jewson Stadium on Saturday, their first victory in 12 Blue Square South games, to move within six points of safety.

And the club's director of football is hoping his side can get off to a bright start when they visit the Woodspring Stadium this afternoon.

He said: "Weston are not having a great run and they got beat by Bognor on Saturday. We need to go there and be positive and try to stamp our authority on the game early, which is what we tried to do against Basingstoke, because if you have a good opening 15-20 minutes then the players generally grow in confidence.

"We've got to be on it from the first minute and try to impose ourselves on the game so that Weston don't grow in confidence, if we can do that I'm sure we'll be okay."

Salisbury City loanee Nick Eastham scored his first goal in a Magpies' shirt on Saturday to earn a precious three points for the county town side.

Brooks added: "If we had not won it then would have made it even more difficult for us to get out of the bottom three but we would still have had eight more games to go and 24 points to play for.

"All you can do is try and win each game as it comes up, the win has given everyone a massive lift but the fight started ever since we were in this position.

"I just feel that there has been an improvement in the competitiveness of the side and the shape of the team suits us.

"We scored early on, it's a long time to be leading and we would have liked a second goal, but we must take confidence from the fact that we did work hard, kept a clean sheet and held on to a 1-0 lead, something we've not done this season."

Patrece Liburd, whose looked solid at the heart of the Magpies' defence since joining last month, suffered a knock in Saturday's game but Brooks is confident he will be fit for today.

He said: "Patrece tweaked his knee and received some ice after the game but I'd be surprised if he wasn't okay for the game against Weston.

"Patrece has made a big difference to us, as has Francisco Ramos and Nick Eastham who we are hoping to have here on loan for another month."
