On the brink

Dorchester's hopes of avoiding relegation from the Blue Square South look doomed after they were beaten 1-0 by Thurrock at the Jewson Stadium on Saturday.

The Magpies are now ten points from safety and have played a game more than fourth-bottom Weston-super-Mare.

David Bryant's controversial 63rd minute goal, following treatment for a Thurrock player, inflicted the Magpies' 21st league defeat this season.

Dorchester's director of football Shaun Brooks was unhappy with the manner in which Thurrock won the game but was content with his side's performance.

He said: "They tried to smash it out of play and Francisco Ramos went to receive the ball but he slipped and it came off his shin and went out for a corner and their goal resulted from that corner.

"In hindsight, Chico should probably have left the ball and we should have restarted with a goal kick."

Brooks admitted that he was a little bit bitter that Thurrock did not then kick the resultant corner out of play.

He added: "I would like to think that that is what we would have done as that would have been the right thing to do.

"The game was only stopped because their man has gone down but they didn't kick the corner out and we paid the price.

"The result was disappointing but I thought we did everything in the performance other than score a goal.

"Therein is really where are problem lies at the moment. Defensively, we were sound. We won every header and every tackle and we've had the vast amount of possession.

"We played well but just can't put the finishing touch to a lot of good work.

"While we are bitterly disappointed with the result, we are pleased with the performance and I think it is a group of young men who are getting better and better.

"I heard criticism from the crowd that we lacked passion but you know we couldn't have worked any harder in the game.

"At the moment we haven't got the budget in place to go out and get a goalscorer who is going to get 25 goals which makes a difference in this league.

"We're working within our means. I think we've got a terrific bunch of young players but we are two or three players away from having a very competitive and good side.

"With the goal today, we have only conceded three in the last three five games. What is needed is a goalscorer to finish off some of the good work."

Brooks could not hide the face that his side's chances of avoiding relegation are now hanging by a thread.

He said: "It's going to be very difficult. The other sides again picked up good results and Welling and St Albans have shown form in the last six games as good as anyone in the league.

"It is very difficult but we will play until it is over and even when it is we will keep trying to win each game until the end of the season.

"We teach the players that they have got to give 100 per cent whether it be in training or in games."
