Alex moves on

Assistant-boss and former captain Alex Browne has been appointed
as the new player-manager at Wessex Premier League outfit Wimborne
Town.
The 35-year-old leaves the county town club after six seasons and
revealed it was a difficult decision to make.
He said: “It’s all happened very quick and sudden.
I finished training last Thursday and Shaun Brooks said Wimborne
had asked to speak to me about becoming player-manager.
“We discussed it and I then got a call from Wimborne on Friday
and went to see them yesterday afternoon and now it’s all
done and dusted.
“It pulls on the heart strings to leave Dorchester because
it’s a fantastic place to be but this was too good an opportunity
to turn down.
“After the two big non-League clubs in the county Wimborne
are the next biggest so I felt I had to give it a go.
“How much I’ll play I don’t know. I’ll
go there and have a look around and play it by ear.”
Browne joined the Magpies in the summer of 2003 after more than
10 years and over 600 appearances at rivals Weymouth.
The defender, who was appointed Shaun Brooks’ right-hand
man last May, went on to make 216 appearances in Dorchester colours,
his last coming in the 4-0 Dorset Senior Cup victory over Blandford
United two weeks ago in which he scored.
Browne added: “I’d like to thank Shaun and Dorchester
for giving me the opportunity as assistant. They’ve got things
to get on with now, like the FA Cup replay next week, and hopefully
this won’t disrupt it. I still want them to do well but things
change in football all the time, players come and go and clubs just
get on with it.”
Former Dorchester boss Mark Morris was linked with the Cuthbury
hot-seat, but Wimborne director Paul Miller revealed only Browne
and ex-Terra and Magpie Gary Borthwick were interviewed for the
post.
And while Browne, at first glance, appears to have little managerial
experience, Miller insists the defender’s youth can help ignite
his club’s faltering fortunes.
He said: “We were very impressed with Alex’s approach
and what he can bring to the football club. We interviewed Gary
Borthwick as well and he was an exceptional candidate. He is very
knowledgeable of the game, but the key thing for us with Alex was
continuity.
“Alex still plays and is a quality centre-back, which is
something else we felt we needed to bring to the club. That is pretty
much what swung it.”
Browne was in the dugout on Saturday as Dorchester captured a draw
at Oxford United in their first round FA Cup clash, and he was delighted
with the display despite seeing the Magpies denied a famous victory
after Ryan Moss’ late goal was disallowed for an alleged handball.
He said: “We rode our luck a bit and you’re going to
get that against a side in a higher league but in the second half
we were fantastic.
“It gives the lads confidence and hopefully they can go out
and do it again.”
