Young Socceroos call on Nicholson
by
Rob Hodder
Dorchester Town attacking midfielder Mitchell Nicholson has been
called up to the Australian Under-20 squad for their forthcoming
training camp in Amsterdam, Holland.
The squad meet up for three days (15-17 September) as they prepare
to take part in the AFC 2008 Youth Championship Finals which
take place in Saudi Arabia between October 31st and November
14th this year.
The exciting 18-year-old playmaker who was formally a Portsmouth
youth team member spent last year training with the Magpies
before finally making his debut on the final day of the season in
the 1-0 away victory over play-off contenders Bromley.
After working very hard during pre-season and impressing in several
of the club's friendly games the youngster has broken into the first
team squad starting in three of the Magpies opening seven Blue Square
South fixtures.
After receiving the news of his call-up Mitchell was quick to pay
tribute to the role his manager Shaun Brooks has played in his development.
Speaking after training this morning he said, "The gaffer has been
working with me for over two years now and he has been absolutely
fantastic
"When he left Portsmouth for Dorchester I knew straight away that I wanted
to stay working with him and it's now paying off."
Nicholson then went on to talk about life in England away from
his family who are back in Australia, saying, "It's been really
hard to be away from home for so long especially when I have not
been playing in the first team here, but the support I have had
from the gaffer and my fellow team mates is brilliant.
"I'm thrilled to bits to get this chance and after two years
of really hard work I am ready to make the most of it."
Dorchester boss Shaun Brooks was equally pleased at the call-up
of his player. He said, "Everyone at the club is delighted for Mitchell.
I have been coaching him for over two years now and have taken a
great deal of pleasure watching him develop as a footballer and
as a man."
"To get a call-up from your country is a fantastic honour and we
are all very proud of him as are his family back in Australia."
"I think this recognition of Mitch puts our football club
in good light too. We are working with a lot of young players many
whom have been let go by football league academies and we are trying
to give them a second chance in football."
