Focus for Forbes

Ivan Forbes believes fewer distractions off the field could see
the Magpies vastly improve on recent seasons.
Over the last two years, 30 per cent wage cuts, a player exodus,
talks of a merger with Weymouth, death threats to ex-chairman Eddie
Mitchell and discontent in the boardroom have created unwanted headlines
for the Dorchester faithful.
And Forbes, who spent the majority of last season sidelined by
knee ligament damage following a poor tackle in the opening game
at Braintree Town, is keen to see a more settled atmosphere at the
club.
He said: “We’ve had a lot of problems off the pitch
in recent times and things have been unsettled but hopefully this
year we can focus on the football as opposed to what’s happening
off the field.
“Last season we started okay as we didn’t lose for
four games, so if we can just concentrate on the football then we
should do well and who knows how high we could finish.
“A good season would be to finish in the top five though.
One thing we’ve got to do first is get out of finishing in
the bottom five or six.”
The Portuguese winger has looked lively in pre-season, despite
being substituted on a couple of occasions as a precautionary measure,
and is determined to enjoy this season’s opener at home to
St Albans City a great deal more than last year’s.
He added: “I’ve had to come off a couple of times as
a precaution which has been annoying but my knee’s been okay.
“The knee hasn’t caused me any problems to be honest,
it hurt a bit when I was fouled from behind against Eastbourne but
it’s fine.
“When I played a couple of games towards the end of last
season I had that joy of being back and I couldn’t wait for
pre-season to get started.
“When I get out on the pitch I try and enjoy it as much as
possible. You try and set yourself little targets and I’ll
try and reach the ones I couldn’t last year.
“The main one is to not get injured and if I can stay fit
hopefully I’ll do well for the club.”
Following Weymouth’s relegation from the Blue Square Premier,
22-year-old Forbes is eagerly awaiting two massive derby meetings
on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.
He said: “They are going to be big games against Weymouth.
I hear there is always a big crowd of a few thousand, which is more
than I’ve ever played in front of, so I’m looking forward
to those games.”
