Ivan Forbes admitted to feeling speechless after netting twice
to help send Dorchester Town to the top of Blue Square South
on Saturday.
The opening game of last season ended with the Portuguese winger
suffering a knee-ligament injury that kept him out for much of
the campaign.
But on Saturday he experienced very different first day fortunes
as he mesmerised the St Albans City defence in a 3-0 victory at
the Jewson Stadium.
Speaking after the game, the 21-year-old said: “I cannot
describe how happy I am at the moment. I just cannot put it into
words.
“Not only was it great that we won the game but to score
twice was just fantastic and I think everyone could see just how
happy I was after I scored the opening goal.
“Before I was playing behind the strikers but now I am playing
out wide so I did not think I would get as many opportunities to
score this season. However, we played really well and thankfully
I took my chances when they came along.
“It is always great to win your first game of the season
but football is all about consistency and we need to now focus
on going to Staines Town on Tuesday and putting on a similar performance.”
New-signing Neil Martin was also on target for the Magpies and
boss Roy O’Brien was delighted with the overall display.
He said: “We continued the work rate we displayed throughout
pre-season and that is exactly what I asked for.
“We chased people down, hunted in packs and also created
some great chances so I am absolutely delighted. We knew the first
15 to 20 minutes would be a bit gung-ho but we defended well and
once we got in front we always looked in control.
“It is always nice to get off to a good start but it was
how we went about it that was so encouraging. The challenge now
is keeping that going.
“I know I keep saying it but if you have a work rate about
you, you will always create problems for your opponents and that
will be the message we will be drilling into the players again
ahead of the game at Staines.”
Commenting on Forbes’ impressive display, O’Brien
added: “I am delighted for him, along with the rest of the
lads. It is great to have him back and it was good to see him working
forward and back, which is fantastic.”
As for debutants Martin and keeper Ryan Northmore, O’Brien
said: “Neil did very well. He is a natural left-sided player
and I thought he worked really hard.
“Ryan did not have many saves to make but his handling was
assured and there is no doubt that he is a great presence back
there.”
