Groves sets a target

Matt Groves has hailed the management duo of Roy O’Brien and
Ashley Vickers as a key factor in his decision to return to Dorchester.
The striker is delighted to be back at the Jewson Stadium, almost
two years since his departure, and has set his sights on helping
the Magpies achieve a top-half finish in the Blue Square South
after three years of flirting with the drop.
The 29-year-old said: “I’m very happy to be back.
I’d been away for almost two years but I’m back now
and very happy about it.
“I know Roy well. I’ve played with him before, against
him when he was at Weymouth, and then we were at Dorchester again,
albeit for several weeks, a couple of years ago.
“I also know Ashley pretty well as we used to travel together
when we were at Eastleigh early last season.
“Roy and Ashley being in charge was one of the main reasons
I wanted to come back.
“It was made quite easy really. I was still in contact with
the likes of Mark Jermyn and I told him that I didn’t want
to stay at Eastleigh.
“I then spoke to Ashley and really it just took one phone
call to decide, it was then just a matter of sorting the contract
out. However, the money doesn’t interest me, I just wanted
to come back and play football.
“The squad we have at the moment looks good on paper. We’ll
be looking to improve on the club’s league positions over
the last three years, which quite simply haven’t been good
enough, as this club should be looking at finishing mid-table and
above.”
Groves, who made his original debut for the Magpies in November
1998, is also hoping to notch his 400th appearance for the county
town outfit next season, having left the club in September 2007
with 393 games, and 137 goals, under his belt.
He added: “I’ve got a quite a good record at Dorchester
and I’ll be looking to improve on it. I’m also hoping
to reach 400 appearances for the club. I saw Mark reach 400 recently
and it would be nice to catch up with him, or even overtake him – not
that I want him to get injured of course.”
Of his potential partnership with fellow forward Phil Walsh, Groves
said: “I’ve played against him a couple of times. He’s
got a good height about him and he’s good in the air, so
I’ll be looking to feed off him and hopefully get a few goals
because that’s what the team missed towards the end of last
season.”
Groves secured his place in Dorchester folklore by netting a hat-trick
against rivals Weymouth in a 4-1 Boxing Day feast back in 2004.
And the former Portsmouth trainee is looking forward to locking
horns with the Terras once again following their relegation from
the Blue Square Premier.
He added: “I’ve got good memories of playing and scoring
against Weymouth, hopefully I’ll be able to carry that on
when we play them next season.”
Meanwhile, midfielder Darren Watts has not yet been offered a
new contract by Dorchester, but could still win a revised deal
if he impresses in pre-season.
Assistant boss Vickers said: “Darren may be joining us for
pre-season and then we’ll take it from there. He’s
a talented lad but we just can’t promise him anything at
the moment.”
