O'Brien - I'll be ruthless

Dorset Echoby Ky Capel

Dorchester manager Roy O’Brien has promised to take a more ruthless approach with his players following Saturday’s 2-1 loss at the hands of Welling United.

The Wings entered the match without a win on their travels this season, and without a goal in their last four fixtures, but they left the Jewson Stadium with all three points thanks to Yado Mambo’s header and Tom Whitnall’s volley.

After lamenting a poor show from his side, who have now lost their unbeaten home record, O’Brien insisted he is prepared to wield the axe and bring in players who will perform.

He said: “It was very disappointing as we were very lacklustre. I didn’t think we got going at all, and I reckon that if we were still out there now we wouldn’t have scored a second goal.

“The silly errors are costing us week-in-week-out. I’ve got my job to do but if the players on the pitch aren’t doing theirs then I’ll have to get people in who will.

“I’ll have a chat with the chairman Shaun Hearn, see what his thoughts are and hopefully we’ll be able to do something.

“I don’t want to get rid of players but it’s a results business and we’ve got to get some. The lads have had enough chances so no one can complain.

“We appeared to approach the game with a rather lax attitude and I think the lads thought they’d win. And going into a game with that kind of approach often comes back to bite you in the backside.

“Having said that I don’t think we deserved anything from the game with the way we played. Results reflect on me as well and I’ll do my best to improve them.”

To make matters worse, the Magpies are set to be without joint top scorer Ivan Forbes for at least a fortnight after he pulled up with a hamstring injury on Saturday.

However, there is more positive news regarding the fitness of skipper Kevin Hill.

O’Brien added: “Ivan will be out for two to three weeks now, which is a blow especially as we’ve got suspensions coming up. Kevin Hill though could be back next weekend, if not then it’ll be the week after.”

The defeat was a disappointing start for new chairman Shaun Hearn after his takeover was finally made official on Saturday morning.

Previous chairman Dave Roberts has been asked to stay on as a director while David Martin returns to the board, and his position as company secretary, just three days after resigning.

One new face in the county town boardroom will be that of Adam Robertson, who arrives as finance director.

Hearn said: “I’m delighted it’s finally been completed and I’m looking forward to it all.

“It’s always been an ambition of mine to be majority shareholder at the club so I’m very pleased.”

* Dorchester are expected to take their place in today’s draw for the second qualifying round of the FA Cup.

There had been fears that the Magpies would be expelled from the competition because Tony Newman, who has now sold his majority shareholding to Hearn, was believed to have too close an association with former owner Eddie Mitchell – now chairman of AFC Bournemouth.

However, Hearn’s arrival should confirm Dorchester’s participation.
