Poised to strike
by
Ky Capel
Dorchester Town boss Ashley Vickers is on the verge of bolstering
his attacking options ahead of tomorrow’s clash with Havant & Waterlooville
(3pm).
The Magpies, who languish at the foot of Blue Square Bet South,
have yet to score a single goal from open play this season.
In order to rectify the situation, Vickers is eyeing a potential
loan deal for an unnamed striker currently plying his trade in
Blue Square Bet Premier.
If successful, the mystery man could make his debut tomorrow,
when the Hawks come to town.
The county town chief, whose side also visit Hampton & Richmond
on Monday (3pm), said: “We are looking at bringing in a striker
on loan in time for tomorrow’s game.
“I don’t want to say too much about him because it’s
not a done deal yet and these things can come back and bite you.
“He’s currently with a Conference National side but
is a proven goalscorer at Conference South level. I’ve been
calling in a few favours and hopefully we’ll get things sorted
out for tomorrow.
“The chairman Shaun Hearn has been great and is working
hard to get this player in.
“If he comes, he will be a great addition. However, it may
mean that one or two have to go the other way.”
Two players who have left the club, albeit on a temporary basis,
are defender Jake Smeeton and midfielder Harry Nodwell.
The former is back at Gillingham Town, having enjoyed a loan spell
there last season, while the latter joins fellow Magpie Harry Montacute
at Barnstaple.
Vickers added: “They’ve both gone on month-long loans
for now. We haven’t got a reserve side and it’s important
they get games.
“The respective clubs will pay some of their wages as well,
which helps, and hopefully they’ll come back fit and better
for it.”
Looking forward to tomorrow’s encounter, in which the Magpies
will be aiming to stop the rot of four straight defeats, Vickers
said: “We just need that bit of composure to finish off the
opportunities we’re getting.
“We have been dominating games but we need to take our chances
and cut out the individual errors.
“I’m convinced that as soon as we get that first point,
things will snowball for us – it’s about keeping the
faith and the belief.
“The chairman is backing me, which is great, and things
will come around for us.
“We’ve got no fresh injury worries, the only player
out is still Gary Bowles (ankle) and hopefully he will be back
playing in three weeks.”
