Vickers hails Magpies

Ashley Vickers hailed an “exceptional” display from his
troops following a vital victory at Weston-super-Mare on Saturday.
The Magpies put daylight between themselves and Blue Square South
danger in the form of six points thanks to headed goals from Jules
Emati-Emati and Steve Devlin at the Woodspring Stadium.
Emati-Emati and Devlin may have grabbed the headlines but Vickers
paid tribute to “each and every one” of his players
as Dorchester ended a run of five games without a win.
The county town boss, who also gave special praise to the defensive
partnership of Nathan Walker and the returning Kevin Hill, said: “We’re
chuffed to bits. Each and every one of the lads were exceptional.
They all did their jobs and it would perhaps be wrong for me to
pick out individuals.
“But I thought Hilly was immense alongside Nathan who was
great as well. And they proved an excellent platform for everything
that was good about the day.
“I took myself out of the team as I’ve got massive
faith in them.
“Simon Evans was under a lot of pressure at times but he
dealt with it superbly and he’ll get better as he goes on.
Ryan Moss answered a lot of his recent critics while Mark Jermyn
was superb and is starting to create a good understanding with
James Coutts.
“We defended well and took our chances. It was great to
see Devs get the goal his endeavour deserved and also for Jules
to get his first goal.
“It was also nice to take the lead instead of having to
come back from behind – it’s another step forward for
us.”
The Magpies missed out on three points earlier in the week as
wasted opportunities saw them draw with lowly Lewes. As a result,
Vickers brought Emati-Emati into the starting XI at the expense
of leading scorer Matt Groves.
Vickers added: “I have every faith in Groover and that goes
for Mossy, Jules and Sam Charles as well. It’s not an easy
thing to leave people out but I felt it was time to make a change
and that was vindicated with Jules scoring.”
The only negative was a 22nd minute injury to left-back Jake Smeeton,
who hurt his ankle while going for a challenge.
Vickers said: “He put his body on the line and that’s
what we want. Obviously he’s got slightly hurt as a result
but it was a great tackle and it stopped them gaining a chance
at goal.”
Meanwhile, Vickers also paid tribute to the travelling fans, which
included one man – Mark Smith – who flew out to Afghanistan
only the next day.
He added: “That word supporter means you’ve got to
get behind your team and they were fantastic.”
Dorchester hope to extend their unbeaten run to four games when
they entertain Thurrock tomorrow night (7.45pm).
