Devlin: We are on the up

Dorset Echoby Ky Capel

Match-winner Steve Devlin believes the Magpies can now start to look up rather than down.

Tuesday night’s win over play-off chasing Thurrock, Dorchester’s second Blue Square South triumph in a row, lifted the county town side to 16th in the table – nine points clear of danger.

Dorchester are now only four points adrift of mid-table security and Devlin, who scored the winning goal to sink the Fleet, is keen to close the gap on the sides above.

He said: “We’re growing in confidence, training has been good, everybody is working hard and it’s nice that we’ve been able to reward the fans who come week in, week out. Hopefully we can give them another win against Bromley on Saturday.

“We’ve gone four games unbeaten and it’s nice to get a run under our belts. It’s all about confidence and once we got those two draws against Staines and Lewes we then won at Weston and that set us up for Tuesday night. We just need to keep going and see where it takes us.

“We’re starting to look up and we want to start climbing that table. It doesn’t matter what goes on around us, we just need to concentrate on our football and get the results we need. We’re moving in the right direction though.”

Caretaker-manager Ashley Vickers felt that eight weeks of hard work finally came to fruition in the victory over Thurrock.

Devlin echoes those sentiments, adding: “Ash has been drumming it into us that we need to keep on our toes and keep plugging away. He believes in all of us, we all believe in each other and we’re starting to gel.

“It’s taken a few weeks to get there but we’ve just got to keep it going and keep training hard.

“Apart from the Weymouth game on New Year’s Day we haven’t played that badly, we’re starting to get that lucky bounce that eluded us in the past.”

Devlin joined the Magpies from Dorset Premier League side Holt United in October, climbing five rungs on the non-League ladder in one fell swoop.

The midfielder admits he is still adjusting to his new surroundings, but is extremely happy with life at the Jewson Stadium.

He said: “I’ve got to relax a bit more when I get on the ball but it will come. It’s been a massive step up for me and not many people get the same chance, but I’m working hard.

“Ash and Roy O’Brien brought me to the club, I’m chuffed I made the step up and I can’t get enough of it at the moment.

“I’ve scored two in two and hopefully I can get some more goals for the club and lift us higher in the table.”
