Magpies show true grit

Ashley Vickers hailed the Magpies’ ability to grind out a result
in the wake of their 2-0 win over Bishop’s Stortford.
Goals either side of half-time from strikers Ryan Moss and Matt
Groves sealed victory for Dorchester in a far from entertaining
spectacle at the Avenue Stadium.
The triumph elevated the Magpies to the 15th spot in the Blue
Square South standings, overtaking Saturday’s visitors in
the process and opening up a 12-point gap between themselves and
the bottom three.
County town boss Vickers was delighted with the outcome. He said: “It
wasn’t a good game to watch but I think the pitch played
a part in that. We train on the pitch and therefore the groundsman
does a fantastic job to get it fit to play.
“But it’s so heavy and it’s not proving to be
a good surface to play the kind of football we want to play.
“It was not a pretty game and Bishop’s Stortford came
with a game plan which forced us to change things around after
a few minutes.
“We were maybe a little fortuitous to get the first goal
but over the balance of play I felt we deserved the win.
“There were a few enlightening moments at half-time let’s
say but we regrouped, took things on board and got stronger in
the second half.
“Good teams grind out results and that’s exactly what
we did. The lads are doing well and producing good play because
they’re all helping each other and working hard.
“The standard has been set and we’ve got to keep it
up. We didn’t play as well as we can in the first half but
it’s about digging in and the extra endeavour came through.”
Moss celebrated his return from illness with a first-half header
while Groves justified his recall to the starting XI by notching
his second penalty in as many games.
Vickers added: “I wasn’t able to enjoy the first goal,
because of the way we were playing, but I enjoyed the second more
so.
“It was a clear penalty and Groover dispatched it as he
does, just like at Welling the previous week.
“I’m ever so pleased for Groover to get his place
back and score the penalty, and I’m just as pleased for Mossy.
That’s not to say things won’t change because we’ve
got several good strikers at the club.”
Vickers also gave praise to winger Nick Crittenden, who lit up
a dull afternoon with a clever flick in the build-up to Moss’ opener.
He said: “Critts has got a special quality and that’s
what he brings to the team. He gives us that extra dimension and
what a piece of skill to set up Mossy for what was a brave header.”
Crittenden was forced off late on during Saturday’s win
but Vickers added: “Critts has had an ankle problem of late
and it was just a knock.”
