Ryan waits for decision on manager

Dorset Echoby Ky Capel

Ryan Moss is holding fire on signing a new deal at Dorchester Town.

The Magpies’ striker, who celebrated his return from illness by netting the opener in Saturday’s 2-0 win over Bishop’s Stortford, has been offered a one-year extension at the Avenue Stadium.

But first, the 23-year-old is keen to discover who will be in county town hot seat for the start of the 2010/11 campaign.

He said: “I was offered a contract last Thursday but my position is that I want to know who the manager is for next season as I want to be playing for someone I trust.”

And that man could be current boss Ashley Vickers, who has been put in charge until at least the end of the current season.

Moss would be more than happy to see Vickers given the role on a permanent basis.

He said: “Management is a different role for him but he’s taken to it brilliantly. With the help of someone like Sean Ferguson we’ve brought in more of a sports science ethic and we’ve taken a full-time approach into a part-time club, which is giving us an extra edge at the moment.

“We don’t have a permanent manager as such but a lot of players, such as James Coutts and Kyle Critchell, are here because of Ash and they all trust him.

“A lot of the players would sign a new contract tomorrow if they knew he was going to be manager heading into next season.

“That’s something perhaps the club needs to look into because players want to know what they’re doing next season.”

Saturday’s victory saw the Magpies extend their impressive run to just one defeat in eight Blue Square South outings.

Moss added: “Last season we were very inconsistent whereas now I think the gaffer has to take a lot of credit for what he’s done and the boys are believing in themselves.

“We may not be winning 3-0 or 4-0 but we’re grinding out results and moving up the table as a result.

“It’s a shame the season didn’t start a month ago. We didn’t start the campaign particularly well but hopefully the lads will stick around for next season and carry on this form.”

Moss also paid tribute to the county town defence, which has conceded just twice in the last six games.

He said: “The back four we have now is probably the strongest I’ve seen at this club for a long time.

“When the defence is not conceding goals everyone’s life is made much easier.”

The former Bashley man, who has eight goals to his name this term, is now looking forward to testing himself against play-off chasing Woking this Saturday.

He added: “Everyone’s confident. We lost 3-1 at Woking earlier in the season but we gave it our best shot. I’d back us this time out and I think we’ll do well as we are more than capable of getting a result.”
