Magpies' boss looking for Woking revenge

Dorset Echoby Ky Capel

Ashley Vickers is hoping to inflict more misery on a Woking side that gave him a harsh introduction to life in the managerial hot-seat.

The 37-year-old was appointed caretaker-manager at the Avenue Stadium on November 22, following the dismissal of Roy O’Brien.

But, in his first game at the helm, the Dorchester Town boss was dealt a baptism of fire at the hands of the Cards – losing 3-1 at the Kingfield Stadium.

The Magpies though, enter tomorrow’s reverse fixture (3pm) in confident mood.

Vickers’ men stretched their unbeaten home record in Blue Square South to eight games last Saturday courtesy of a 2-0 win over Bishop’s Stortford, while on the same day the Cards slumped to their fourth straight defeat – a 5-0 battering against Welling United.

Dorchester’s manager said: “They are indifferent at the moment and lost 5-0 last weekend but we need to be aware of that because they will be keen to bounce back.

“They are a full-time side and have some good players at their disposal, so on their day they are a class outfit.

“We lost 3-1 at their place in my first game in charge and their full-time fitness was a factor in that game.

“But we are much fitter and mentally stronger now, and we’re a match for anyone.

“Tomorrow is a game the lads should be relishing. They need to walk out of the changing room feeling 10ft tall and look to take the game to Woking.

“Our home form is good and hopefully we can keep that going.”

Nick Crittenden limped out of last weekend’s win late on but Vickers is hopeful the winger will be fit to face the Cards.

Defender Kyle Critchell has played his part in helping the Magpies to four clean sheets in their last six outings.

And his efforts have been rewarded with a place in the Wales semi-professional squad that travels to Portugal for an International Chall-enge Trophy match on Wednesday.

The 23-year-old will miss Tuesday’s trip to St Albans City as a result but Vickers said: “Everyone at the club is so proud of him. He’s getting recognition for good performances week in, week out and that’s the type of player we signed.

“I’ve got a couple of England caps at the same level and I treasure them – you have to take these opportunities when they arise.

“He will be a loss on Tuesday but we have cover.”

Meanwhile, midfielder Harry Nodwell could be sent out on loan in the near future.

Vickers added: “He wants to be playing games so we might see if we can get him some on loan. However, he’s a big part of our future plans.”
