Evans set for Avenue return
by
Ky Capel
Goalkeeper Simon Evans is on the verge of rejoining Dorchester Town.
The Terras’ gloveman first joined the county town outfit
in the summer of 2006 and went on to make 46 appearances before
leaving the Magpies in April 2008 – two months after suffering
a rupture to the medial ligament in his knee.
Evans made his comeback from injury last season at near neighbours
Weymouth but has been kept out of the side this term by first-choice
keeper Ryan Harrison and loaned out to Toolstation Western League
Division One outfit Bridport as a result.
Dorchester’s caretaker-boss Ashley Vickers could complete
the signing of Evans as early as this evening.
He said: “Hopefully we’ll get something sorted out
with Simon and have him on board this week, perhaps even later
today.
“We need cover and competition for Regan Coward and Simon’s
an excellent young keeper so the competition for the number one
jersey should bring the best out of both of them.
“Simon may go back to Bridport on loan but we’ll cross
that bridge when we come to it.”
Asked about any other potential new faces, the defender added: “We
have to make sure we keep within the budget. There’s no one
else coming in at the moment but we are talking to a couple of
players and we’re endeavouring to get the right players in.”
Should he sign, Evans will become Vickers’ fifth signing
since taking over the reins at the Jewson Stadium six weeks ago.
However, yesterday the Magpies lost the services of Phil Walsh
to League Two side Dagenham & Redbridge.
Vickers said: “Phil has gone and he’s a big loss but
his departure, together with my injury, gives an opportunity to
the likes of Gary Bowles and Nathan Walker to cement a place in
the side.
“I’ve got a sharp pain high up on the back of my leg
and it looks like I could be out for a couple of weeks.”
Fellow defender Ollie Barnes joined Clevedon Town on a month’s
loan last week while utility player Harry Montacute is set to make
a similar move but with Gillingham Town or Bourne-mouth Poppies
the likely destination.
Meanwhile, the legal issues between the club and former chairman
Eddie Mitchell appear to be far from resolved.
Vickers added: “It’s ongoing and hopefully I’ll
be speaking to the chairman Shaun Hearn about it today.”
