Vickers has the faith

Caretaker-boss Ashley Vickers has “every faith” that
his Dorchester side can stop the rot of three games without a win
or a goal when they host Thurrock tomorrow (3pm).
The Magpies’ last success came in the 2-1 victory over fellow
strugglers Hampton & Richmond on December 5. Matt Groves’ winner
that day is the last time the county town side found the back of
the opposition’s net following a goalless draw with Weymouth,
a 3-0 defeat to Newport County and a 2-0 loss to the Terras last
Friday.
Tomorrow the Magpies welcome play-off chasing Thurrock to the
Jewson Stadium – providing the pitch passes an inspection
this morning – confident they can upset the odds.
Vickers said: “This is a league where everyone can beat
anyone so we need to approach the game in the right way.
“I have every faith in the players at this club. People
may think we need new strikers but we’ve got three good goalscorers
and I know they will find the net.
“Every player goes through a difficult time at some point
in the season, they have my full support and I’m sure they
will give their all against Thurrock. We will get there. It will
be hard work but we will do it.
“The Weymouth result was a kick in teeth but we’ve
got to use that pain to spur us on and provide even more determination
to do well.”
Vickers (hamstring) has ruled himself out of tomorrow’s
Blue Square South clash through injury while returning keeper Simon
Evans could instead feature for near neighbours Bridport after
he signed dual registration forms with the Toolstation Western
League Division One outfit.
Kevin Hill (foot) remains sidelined, Harry Montacute has joined
Gillingham Town on a month’s loan but Ryan Hill (ankle) is
expected to shake off a minor knock.
Vickers added: “Simon’s on board and he’ll provide
cover and competition for Regan Coward. He’s a good young
prospect and we’ve got two decent keepers at the club.
“We’ll get reports on Harry and I’m sure the
experience will benefit him.
“My injury is responding well but tomorrow is too early
for me. That gives an opportunity to the likes of Nathan Walker
and Gary Bowles and I want them to try and keep the shirt.”
The Magpies’ caretaker-manager remains on the lookout for
new talent. When asked if any new faces could be involved tomorrow,
he replied: “Possibly, possibly not – we’ll see.
I’ve had a chat with Shaun Hearn and we devised an action
plan of where we want to be.
“There are players we are looking at and some players may
have to go the other way as we are working to a budget.”
Ongoing legal issues with former chairman Eddie Mitchell continue
to delay the appointment of a permanent boss.
And, as a result, the favourite to succeed Roy O’Brien – Gorka
Etxeberria – has been forced to return home to the Basque
Country for the time being.
Vickers said: “We thanked him for his time and help and
all the lads said the same. He will still help the club when he
can and he will keep in touch.”
That means Vickers is expected to lead the side for the foreseeable
future. He added: “I’m enjoying it and the lads are
behind me. We are all endeavouring to get things rights.”
