Magpies' rest could be a blessing
- Vickers

Dorchester Town manager Ashley Vickers is thankful of tomorrow’s
break from Blue Square South action.
The Magpies are without a game this weekend but Vickers believes
the rest could be a blessing in disguise for his depleted squad.
For Tuesday night’s 2-1 defeat at St Albans City, Dorchester
had five men hit by illness and Kyle Critchell missing through
international duty with the Wales semi-professional squad.
Ryan Hill and Harry Nodwell were both laid low, James Coutts and
Gary Bowles were only well enough to make the substitutes’ bench
while Ryan Moss started the game despite not feeling 100 per cent.
Vickers is therefore hopeful that the sickness bug running through
the camp will be eradicated come Tuesday’s trip to Hampton & Richmond
Borough.
He said: “Because we were so depleted on Tuesday it’s
probably a good thing that we don’t have a game tomorrow,
as it will give people the chance to get better.
“Regan Coward has also been battered lately so it’s
good for him to have a rest. He is a brave lad and puts his body
on the line.
Blessing for Vickers’ men “Having said that the lads
are playing to the best of their ability at the moment so there’s
good and bad points to not having a game.”
Reflecting on Tuesday’s loss, in which the Magpies spurned
a host of goal-scoring opportunities, Vickers added: “It
was a real kick in the teeth – a robbery in fact.
“We’ve just got to bounce back now and make sure we
start taking our chances because that’s the reason we didn’t
win on Tuesday.
“A defensive error gave them their second goal but we had
numerous gilt-edged chances to win the game.
“There were lots of positives to come out of it though,
we may have lost but we will take a step forward.”
Since taking temporary charge of the county town side, Vickers
has presided over four wins, six draws and five defeats in league
action.
However, the appointment of a permanent boss has been delayed
in the midst of ongoing legal issues with former owner Eddie Mitchell.
Vickers said: “Hopefully things will eventually be sorted
out in terms of the legal issues, but in the meantime I’ll
just keep getting on with the job in hand.”
Meanwhile, Critchell was unable to prevent Wales suffering defeat
at the hands of Portugal on Wednesday.
The International Challenge Trophy match ended 7-2 in favour of
the hosts, who boasted two full internationals and players from
Benfica, Porto and Sporting Lisbon.
Vickers added: “There were some very good players in the
Portuguese team. Nevertheless it was a great experience for Kyle
and everyone at the club is really proud of him.”
Dorchester look to set to keep hold of hot prospect Jamie Symes
despite interest from Yeovil Town.
The Glovers had put in a seven-day approach for the 16-year-old,
who is on dual registration with the Magpies and Bridport, but
Vickers said: “Jamie has said he’s happy to stay and
wants to try and earn his place in the Dorchester team.
