Jermyn: I may have been forced to leave

Dorset Echoby Ky Capel

Mark Jermyn admits he may have been forced to end his 10-year stay at the Avenue Stadium had the Magpies not turned the corner.

The Dorchester Town stalwart, who recently penned a new two-year contract, is eight matches shy of reaching a remarkable 450 appearances in county town colours.

But had the Magpies failed to shake off the tag of perennial strugglers then the midfielder would have considered a fresh challenge in his career.

Under the guidance of newly-appointed boss Ashley Vickers, Dorchester have moved 13 points clear of the Blue Square South drop-zone and are now eyeing a more lofty position in next season’s competition.

And Jermyn is looking forward to entering his 11th campaign at the club.

He said: “I’ve been at the club for so long that it feels like my home and I don’t want to go anywhere as I enjoy playing at Dorchester.

“We looked as if we were heading for another scrap up until Christmas and if things had carried on the way they were then I would have been tempted to go elsewhere.

“But with the new ownership and the way things are now there is more stability, plus we are winning games.”

Expanding on the impact of chairman Shaun Hearn’s return to the boardroom earlier this season, Jermyn added: “The biggest positive is the change in ownership because Shaun’s from Dorchester, he is well respected and that has had a massive influence.

“Shaun is prepared to back Ash and there’s no reason why we can’t have a good season next year.”

Having been a Dorchester player since the turn of the millennium, Jermyn has seen his fair share of false dawns.

But the 28-year-old has praised the current crop of players. He said: “This group of players will be a strong unit next season.

“We need to strengthen in certain areas but it’s totally different to when Shaun Brooks was manager as he wanted young lads.

“That was fair enough but people knew that was not the way to do it. Now we have got a mixture of youth and experience and the likes of Kyle Critchell, who is a great player, will only improve and that makes for a brighter future.

“The players that Shaun Brooks got in were on triple what the players are on now, even though this group is better.

“That shows that the guys at the club want to play for Dorchester – it’s not about money.”

Jermyn hopes to make his 40th appearances of the season when the Magpies travel to Bath City on Good Friday.
