Hookway set for Magpies trial

Dorset Echoby Ky Capel

Dorchester Town will run the rule over keeper Mike Hookway this summer.

The gloveman made 26 appearances for Romsey Town in the Wessex Premier League last term but will try his hand with the Magpies during pre-season training.

And boss Ashley Vickers is hopeful that Hookway will provide stiff competition for current stoppers Regan Coward and Simon Evans, who is currently sidelined by a knee injury.

He said: “Mike’s been playing further down the pyramid but he wants to make the step up and is much sought after.

“He will come down for pre-season. We’re not going to commit to anything and neither is he, it’s a question of him proving himself. If so, there could be something on the table.

“I’m sure he would provide good competition for Regan Coward and Simon Evans. Simon is due to have an operation on June 10 and the recuperation should take six weeks.”

Also on Vickers’ radar are two strikers. The county town chief was remaining tight-lipped on his targets but one of the unnamed forwards is believed to be former Terra Stuart Douglas.

Vickers added: “I’ve spoken to two strikers and we’re just waiting to hear back. They have offers from other clubs so we should hear something at the start of next week.”

Meanwhile, the Magpies have added three more fixtures to their pre-season itinerary.

A Portsmouth XI will visit the Avenue Stadium on Wednesday, July 21 (7.45pm), Dorchester will then travel to Bashley on Tuesday, August 3 (7.45pm) before making the short journey to the Wessex Stadium to face the Terras on Saturday, August 7 (3pm).

Of the date with rivals Weymouth, Vickers said: “The game is being played the week before the season starts so it will be a good test. I think both teams will be sharing the gate money so it will provide revenue for both clubs.

“It’s good for the supporters to see another game between the two teams but the most important thing is that we don’t pick up any injuries.

“There’s no love lost between the two teams and it’s easy to get carried away with these games, but I will always take three points in the first game of the season over any friendly win.”
